Q: Has anybody experienced hair loss with the Epilepsy medication Keppra?
I was wondering if anybody has experienced hair loss with the medication Keppra. Also for anybody who experienced it, is there anyway to stop or reverse the hair loss.

A: That is one of the listed side effects. I would call your doctor. They can switch the med or alter the dosage. Usually the hair starts growing back after that.

Q: Will there be a change in my personality when i come off epilepsy medication “keppra”?
I’m coming off my medication shortly because i don’t have epilepsy anymore because i had a brain tumor removed. I was wondering if the side effects off keppra will disappear when i come off it

A: When you stop taking the Keppra the side effects should go away. Rarely people have permanent side effects, but that is very uncommon.

Q: Can the medication, Keppra, used to treat epilepsy, now be tested and monitored by drawing a blood level?
When Keppra was approved to treat epilepsy and seizures, it was not able to be followed in the patients system by a blood level. I believe it was because of how it was metabolized. I was recently told that it was possible to follow a level for Keppra. Don’t know if it’s a blood level, a urine level, etc. Any help? My 13 yr old has cp (severe) and has been successfully treated (until recently) with Keppra. Thanks!

A: I’m 36, and i’m in the same boat as your son. But YEARS ago when i was on keppra, my doctor tested it by blood. But if keepra got his seizures going again, he should go back to what he was on. Now i’m going into the Neuro Pace study at USC. I’ve been on every med on the market, and nothing has helped me.

Q: Is Keppra a good medication?
I have just been diagnosed with epilepsy and prescribed the medication Keppra. Is it any good? Experiences with Keppra? Thanks.

A: I’ve had epilepsy since I was 14 i think…but was diagnosed only when i was 18… i’ve taken Epilim, Depakote ER and now my doctor said i should change to Keppra. I started taking Keppra about 2/3 months ago…in the beginning, i started off with 1000mg a day, but then i had about 5 seizures in a day and was admitted to hospital (i normally rarely have seizures– controlled with meds). so they increased my dosage to 1500mg a day but about a month later i had 3 seizures in a day. although wasn’t admitted to hosp, the doc said to increase the dosage to 2000mg a day. so that’s what i’m taking now. when i took Depakote ER, i gained weight very fast because of the increase in appetite. but since taking keppra, i lost about 25lbs. i also don’t experience as much hair loss as before and my period is more regulated.
However, everytime i increase the dosage, i do feel very groggy, confused and like everything is weird. i can’t remember things that i’m used to doing, my motor coordination is a bit off. i also get angry and irritated very fast, and i say things that are on my mind without thinking. it’s like when ur drunk or something like that. It does go away after about 10 days or so…
I did have a seizure today, but it was only once, and my mom said that i got out of it faster than i used to. i even went to the mall about an hour later.
So, although i’m NOT a doctor, i do think that keppra is better than the other meds i’ve taken. it is quite expensive tho. i pay about $250 for 60 pills, which is about $500 a month, and i don’t have insurance. i would suggest that u don’t drive or operate machinery in the first few weeks or until u get used to it. also, drink lots of water and try and exercise. it does help. even just brief walks are good. and the keppra website does have a seizure diary. i would suggest using that to keep track of ur seizures and other things.
I hope this info helps. if u have any other Q’s, don’t hesitate to ask.

Good Luck!

Q: did you ever stop taking keppra medication for epilepsy because of the side effects?

A: Yeah, I was initially prescribed Keppra, but I felt like I was in a permanent daze or dream. It felt like it feels right after a seizure. I can’t really describe it. A constant state of confusion maybe?

Anyway, I stopped Keppra – with doctors approval – and started on Tegretol. Now all is good :)

Q: Ever been on Keppra Medication?
I just recently started taking Keppra and feel slightly dizzy,500 mg 2 times a day, along with trilepta(to slowly wean off it)l,levothroid,lithium,diazapam..I asked to switch due to bad dizziness and possibly causes dreams.Anyone had experiences with some of these meds?
I am just wondering what others experiences are. I am doing well on Keppra with no major side effects.

A: Stay on the Keppra. You only have to take it for ten days.

Q: when taking keppra medication am i allowed to drink alcohol .thank you?

A: I take Keppra 500mg twice daily. I drank 2 beers and was drunk. The next day I was in bed with THE WORST hangover ever. I never used to get drunk from just 2 beers or have hangovers, so it’s all due to the Keppra. I STRONGLY advise that you don’t drink while taking it.

Q: are these side effects from my medication called keppra to help my epilepsy?
do not concentrate properly so i act a bit dopey

can not take a joke

my dosage is 1250mg twice a day

A: i take the same thing because i have frontal lobe epilepsy yes they are side effects i take 500mg twice a day.and i hate them because im failing in school because i can’t concentrate.

Q: Keppra Medication Side Effects ?
Right now I am taking Keppra 500mg 1 tab twice a day,Trileptal 600mg 3 times a day(1 tab) Levothroid 1 tab 1 time a day Diazapam 2.5 mg twice a day(1 tab)Lithium 300 twice a day(1 tab) and so my question is I have been on Keppra for heading on two weeks and I have been having some minor dizziness where it is like it is in your mind and you’re dizzy moving from side to side and I was wondering what can I do about this? Most meds I tolerate well so this is kinda unusal.Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

A: Go check with your GP. People could give you wrong answers here..

Q: Can someone, who has been taking Keppra for several years, seizure free, get a privates pilots license?
Diagnosed with Partial Complex Seizures several years ago. Taking medication (Keppra). Have not had a seizure in 5 years. Go several days without taking the medication on a regular basis. Have a huge passion to fly privately. Any advice?

A: It’s all dealt with on a case by case basis. You’ll need a Class III medical certificate from an aviation medical examiner, so they would be the best person to talk to.

The FAAs website has a search thing you can use to find one in your area: http://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator/

Maybe talk to a few, get second opinions. If you know any pilots, ask them who their doctors are.

Q: Can a side effect of a medication take a whole year to show up?
Dizziness is a reported side effect of my medication Keppra that I use for epilepsy. I have been on it for a year and never felt dizzy; the last few days I’ve experienced a lot of dizziness and I was wondering if my Keppra could be causing it.

A: It’s only remotely possible, but you should tell your doctor immediately.

Q: 25 years old…take medication [Keppra] I can’t drink on and it’s really depressing me? :/?
I know that makes me sound like an alchoholic but I’m not. I just like having enough to get a bit of a buzz going, or maybe a bit tipsy. [even when i did drink, i only got 'drunk' maybe twice a year].

My problem is that I have a seizure disorder [the kind that only happen in the brain] and am on medication. I’ve been on a few, [they had negative side effects]. The one I’m on now is the best as far as the side effects go- the only thing is it is the WORST with alchohol. I can’t have more than 2 beers [max] without getting a bad hangover. It’s like my body can’t take it.

My boyfriend [almost fiance], and all my friends drink. He is the best. He has really helped in driving me until i get a car and so forth. Everytime we go out with friends though, he drinks his heart away. He doesn’t get ‘wasted’ everytime, but fairly tipsy and goofy. I feel like staying home now. It depresses me to go out because, while I can have a good time with sober people, it sucks when everyone around you is at the bar and getting silly and you can’t relate. When I was on other medications this wasn’t really a problem for me..

What should I do? I feel that this is going to ruin my friendships, but most important is my relationship. He has started going drinking more cuz some old friends moved back to our area. The fact that now he drinks and we do things with friends more often [we stayed at home alot more before] depresses me alot because i can’t participate…and when i’m not laughing at all the dumb jokes or people getting drunk it makes me seem ‘unfun’.

What should i do?

A: There are two parts to your question that need to be looked at.

First, a seizure disorder is a problem with the wiring in the brain, and as such any substance that can change that wiring can lead to more seizures. Honestly, regardless of the medication side effects, you should not really be drinking that much anyway, to lessen your chances of having a seizure.

Second, you claim to only want to drink enough for a buzz and aren’t an alcoholic, but then say now you can’t drink more than two beers while they get wasted. Which is it? A beer or two with friends should be more than enough.

As for your friends and fiance, if they truly are your friends and love you they will understand that you cannot drink due to a medical condition and the medications you need to take for it. You can have fun without the alcohol, i regularly go out with friends and for many reasons I do not drink at all. I am still included and still have fun.

A: Well, the way I see it is your health comes first and foremost. Having a seizure disorder is a pretty serious condition that you have to take very seriously. Sounds to me like your ,almost fiance is being very selfish. If the medication that you are currently on works the best for you,but you can’t drink-THEN DON”T DRINK! Your almost fiance is going to have to understand that he can’t go partying when you clearly can’t! therefore HE is going to have to make a dicision. He is going to have to decide what is more inportant drinking with friends or a life with YOU!! already by the age of 25 the drinking scene with friends should not be as important as it wonce was. On the other hand,YOU being the almost fiance ARE what is important. GOOD LUCK

Q: Is it safe to smoke marijuana with an undiagnosed seizure dis. and is it interfere with the medication keppra?
Can marijuana cause seizures? I have found evidence on both sides of this arguments similar to what these websites say http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/marieff.htm
http://biotech.icmb.utexas.edu/botany/hemphist.html
Also my doctor said not to take any drugs, but as cliche as it may seem I have a hard time putting marijuana in the same category as other drugs. Though I know the smartest thing to do is not smoke until my problem has been diagnosed and stabilized, can anyone offer me any other incite with this issue.I am on 500mg of Keppra a day. Thank you for your time.

A: Marijuana affects the brain & nervous system & so it is inadvisable to use it if you have a suspected brain or neurological condition.
I don’t think it can fundamentally cause seizures of its own accord, but if you have seizures it can trigger them or make them worse.

Q: my dr put me on a medication called keppra for epilepsy. he wants me to take 1000mg twice daily. I have taken?
UP TO 1200 MG THROUGHOUT THE DAY BUT NEVER 2000 MG IN TWO DOSES. DOES THIS SEEM HIGH FOR THIS DRUG.

A: 1000mg of Keppra twice a day is in the mid-range for dosing. 3000mg per day (1500mg twice a day) is the highest recommended dose. Doses higher than that have shown no benefit in decreasing seizure activity.
