Q: Pregnancy and Levetiracetam (Keppra) tablets?
Hello,
I was diagnosed with Epilepsy in January 2008 and have been on Levetiracetam tablets ever since, I am now only on 125mg tablets a day (half of a blue 250mg tablet) and was just wondering about pregnancy as I have been told not to get pregnant whilst on them, but have never been told why.
I am in a relationship and I am very very careful with birth control, so it would be a very small chance to fall pregnant anyway, but if the contraception did fail and I did fall pregnant, what is the chances of having a healthy baby and also, would the medication harm the baby at all?

If possible, could someone explain why you shouldn’t really have a baby whilst on them.
I have only ever had 4 seizures so that’s why I’m on a very low dose.
Thank you.

A: Epileptic drugs carry a HIGH risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect… I would take folic acid just as a precaution…. Not everyone who is treated for epilepsy has a baby with a NTD.. But your risk goes up higher.

Q: can i take periactin tablet while I’m taking keppra tablet?

A: I wouldn’t advise it, without a doctor’s supervision.

Q: do u know what is inside Keppra 500 mg tablet? pls do list ingredient…?
Because since i been taking it, i stayed awake in daytime and can’t sleep sometimes in night. do it sounds familiar to you? i also takt tompax and dilitan too …. are they something that cause awaken ?if so then why?

A: Generally (unless you’re working a night shift) you’re SUPPOSED to stay awake all day!

Q: Why can’t you crush Keppra?
I had a seizure after upping my dose by 1,000 but I was breaking the pills in half to swallow easier.

Is Keppra an ER tablet? Why do they say do not crush? Thanks.

A: It is not an extended release (ER) but it does have to pass through much of your digestive system undigested in order to be effective. The drug needs to get into the lower intestine so it is coated. Crushing or even cutting it will cause the drug to become not as useful since it will not get to the proper receptors in the brain.

Q: Might have accidentally taken too many anti-convulsants?
I’ve got epilepsy and have to take Keppra (levetiracetam) twice a day. I normally take two 250 mg tablets in the morning and two 250 mg tablets in the evening, but I think that, tonight, I might have accidently taken the evening dose twice.
Does anyone know if this is likely to be serious, or won’t it matter?

A: I have epilepsy too and take keppra also i have done that before and i am 11nothing bad happend but i am 11 and everyone is diffrent nothing bad will happen

Q: Question for ppl who have epilepsy & tried to concieve?
I had a brain opertaion last year to remove a tumour – which after the trauma from the op has given me epliepsy. My epilepsy is not from a primary source, it has only come on through the op. My Neurologist has prescribed me Keppra tablets now which I take twice a day 1250mg day & same of the night. I have read on net that these tablets can harm & increase your risks of birth defects by a small percentage whilst pg. I have started taking folic acid at the Dr’s prescribed amount of 5mg per day. But I know this will only help reduce the risk of a defect not elimnate it all together.
Does anyone here have any exp in pregnacy whislt taking anti epileptic drugs & what was your exp in pregnacy like? did you have to come off you tablets to help you concieve etc? does your hospital monitor you more closely ie scans due to your medical history? have they ever suggested a c section instead of normal birth due to risks.

Many Thanks in advance

A: there are great epilepsy websites where you can get all your questions answered.
my cousin has epilepsy, since the age of 12. she’s now 32 but never succeeded in getting pregnant. epilepsy drugs tend to lower the chances of getting pregnant, but you have to weigh the pros and cons. you can’t stop taking a drug , when you need it. my cousing stopped taking her drugs, under medical observation of course, a couple of years ago. the reason was that her epilepsy was due to adoloscence, and she didn’t need the treatment any more. but she still didn’t conceive. now she’s in the process of adopting a beautiful baby boy. so, although i wish you best of luck in getting pregnant, there are always other roads to happiness.

goodluck and all the best for your health and hapiness.

Q: my 12 yr old son is starting on Trileptal.is there anything not listed in reactions that I should watch for?
He is now taking 1750 mg of keppra daily and 400 mg of topamax.He had a seizure last night and Doc wants to add Trileptal 150mg one half a tablet 2 times a day for 7 days then increase to 1 tablet 2 times a day.

A: Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Trileptal can reduce the sodium in your body to dangerously low levels, which can cause a life-threatening electrolyte imbalance. Contact your doctor right away if you have nausea, vomiting, weakness, thirst, loss of appetite, headache, confusion, hallucinations, muscle pain or weakness, and/or increased or more severe seizures.

Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;

jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);

fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms;

easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;

urinating less than usual or not at all; or

increased seizures.

Less serious side effects may include:

mild nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea;

problems with speech, balance, or coordination;

blurred vision;

mental slowness, trouble concentrating;

tremors or shaking;

dizziness, drowsiness; or

skin rash

Q: Epileptic medication; how many more countries (beside Spain & Portugal) can you get tablets ‘over the counter’?
Know a friend who has been epileptic for twenty years now – he went abroad for the first time last month to Spain, and over the border to Portugal. He managed to get two weeks of medication after showing his E111 card to a pharmacist in Malaga. Is there anywhere else in continental Europe…and indeed, the rest of the world that will sell such medication ‘over the counter’ – in this case, carbamazepine and Keppra?
Thank you, Mr. Uh Az…the E111 is a card which can be used to get medication free – whatever it may be in continental Europe. my friend back in the UK would have to make an appointment, then wait three days to collect his tablets. Just wondering why certain medication can be bought as easy as talcum powder in some parts of the world, but not in others.

A: Tegretol (carbamazapine) would be strictly on prescription and is often given in incremental increases and varying doses depending on the severity and frequency of seizures.
UK would have reciprocal health care arrangements within
EU countries I’m sure.
My message is dont go abroad without it !

Q: Tiredness and Epilepsy?
I have epilepsy i was diagnosed with it at the age of 12 but after few years my doc took me my meds. nearly a year ago my mum noticed that i was suffering from absences normally associated with epilepsy in teenagers. I’m 18 now and my tablets (keppra 500mg) are making feel so tired and i now have a job. Can any one suggest something that will wake me up but won’t react with my tablets

A: i have epilepsy too and i also take keppra. i was tired a lot as well so my doctor lowered the dosage that i take in the morning so i wasnt so tired and it was ok that the dosage at night was higher because i would be going to bed anyway. you could be having the same problem or you might be having seizures in your sleep and you just dont know it. i know i do sometimes vecause i’ll go to bed at a decent time and get plenty of sleep but i wake up exhausted.

good luck and god bless

A: Ring your out of hours service and tell them what’s going on and if they don’t send someone asap you intend to take her to A&E they tend to listen then as they generally prefer their patients to be treated at home first unless they admit them. If you stll get no luck take her to the A&E Depatment at your local hospital tell them her symptoms are unbearable and she needs help now. It’s not your fault that you GP is so unavailable and this poor girl needs help and advise now!

Q: Auras. Does anyone know what they r. I have them and they’re creepy. How do I stop them?
I am on keppra for epilipsy and not long ago had I think was like an unpleasant aura. I want to know if anyone out there has them andd if they know hoiw to stop them. I don’t know if its the tablets as I have never had them before I went on these tablets. I just want to stop the auras as I would rather be dead than keep having this creepy feeling like someone is trying to take over my mind. I have always thought that there is a spirit in this house that we have been renting for nearly one year now as my cats sometimes keep looking up at the walls and ceilings. Its freaking me out. I’d love to know how to stop them.

A: In spirituality and New Age belief, an aura is a subtle field of luminous multicolored radiation surrounding a person or object as a cocoon or halo. An aura may be held to represent or be composed of soul vibrations or chakras, and may reflect the moods or thoughts of the person it surrounds.

Skeptics such as Robert Todd Carroll say that although there is no scientific evidence for supernatural perception of auras, auras may be seen for explainable reasons such as migraines or synaesthesia.
