Q: Keppra…?
I have recently been diagnosed with epilepsy and prescribed Keppra. Is Keppra a good medication to take? Side effects? Experiences? I’d be greatful of any insight because just looking up medications on the internet doesn’t always help, especially on the Keppra site, for it’s basicly just advertisement. I’d like to hear experiences with Keppra, thanks.

A: Keppra is a relatively new anti-epileptic drug that is generally very well-tolerated. In addition to minimal side effects, it also has fewer interactions with other medications than most seizure medicines. I haven’t personally taken the drug, but for most types of seizures this is the first drug I’ve seen used in my training so far.

Q: Has anyone ever been on the drug keppra?
I take lamictal 525mgs a day. My doctor just also started me on keppra 500mg twice a day. Im exhausted. If anyone else is on this, did your body eventually build up a tolerance?

A: About keppra can be read in http://health-schools.blogspot.com/?q=keppra

Q: can taking the medicine keppra make a person make spit bubbles or form at the mouth at times?
My grandson has seizures and been put on keppra and has been weened off of triletal.

A: Ask the pharmacist if drooling is a side effect. The excess drooling can cause or alow someone to blow bubbles. It also may be a withdraw side effect from the triletal.

Q: Does anyone have a child with epilepsy who takes Keppra?
My daughter has epilepsy and she takes 250mg Keppra twice a day. She started getting violent towards her brother, and they told me to give her 50mg of B-6 with her pill.

What kind of side effects have you experienced with children on Keppra?

A: the higher the dosage of Keppra the more violent the child will become. we had to lower my sons dosage. after they did that then he leveled back off and wasnt as easily aggitated or violent. check the website i listed and they have a section that you can lookup different medicine.the other site is great for the epilepsy.

Q: Can the anti-seizure drug Keppra make a woman stop having her period or make it shorter/lighter?
Ever since I’ve been on the drug keppra, my periods have changed signifigantly. I wondered if that was one of the side effects to Keppra.

A: If You Go To This Link There Are Tons Of Woman Having The Same Problems As You. Its A Message Board. They Will Have Way More Answers Than Anyone On Here I’m Sure.

GOOD LUCK!

Q: What are common side effects of Keppra XR?
I was recently diagnosed with having a partial seizure disorder, and my neurologist prescribed Keppra XR to me back in November 2009. It is only taken once a day at night before bed, and at first I felt fine during the day (and it is helping to prevent the onset of more seizures), but since about March I have been feeling drowsy during the day as well. Is there, perhaps, another medication I can try that will not have a side effect of drowsiness?

A: Is tha the only thing your taking? Well i find it weird that your getting that reaction now since youve been on it since november. Are you sleeping less or stressing or having a bad diet. Im taking keppra and ever since ive had it i take a nap during the day. It works perfectly but yea i take naps like a baby. But this has happened to me since the beginning. Maybe you do need to mention that to your doctor. But before you do..try sleeping two hours more during the night for like two weeks to see if that makes a difference. If that doesnt then definitely talk to your doctor. I hope i helped.

Q: Any alternatives to keppra or depakote for siezure disorder?
I have had siezures in the past but my body cant tolorate keppra or depakote is there anything else or are there others with the same problems? I also was diagnosed with narcolypsey and prescribed modafinol but again i could not tolorate the side affects is there anything else i can try?

A: Neurologists diagnosed me with Epilepsy back in 1993 and initially they put me on Dilantin, and was on it for over ten years. But it never helped me because I was still having seizures and it was so distressing. Then in 2003/2004 they put me on Keppra which worked better but Keppra is documented to create significant mood changes. (when I was on it I felt like punching people in the face and everything made me mad, even though I’m normally a docile and kind person) But in 2005 after a visit to a Neurologist specializing in Epilepsy he put me on a drug called Lamictal (generic name: Lamotrigine). I haven’t had a single seizure since! It’s been a god-send! Lamictal is prescribed for a couple of different afflictions, including people with severe depression or who are bi-polar. However, the mental effects are far less significant than Keppra.

Q: does Trileptal and keppra make it impossible for me and my girlfriend to conceive?
me and my girlfriend are concerned that my seizure medicine is making it hard for us to conceive..is this really or is it just a matter of time..please no smart answers please. this is serious. we just want others input on experience or knowledge.

A: i’m guessing if that avatar is supposed to resemble you can’t conceive is becuz you both have a vagina.

You’re going to need a penis

Q: What are the side effects of cutting back on the amount of Keppra that you are taking?
I am going slowly from 1000mg a day to 750 then every other week I am to keep cutting back 1/4 more till zero. What side effects should I look forward to if any?

A: i presume ur doing this under medical supervision because u shouldnt be cutting down without yr doctor knowing, i found this info when i googled it.

Do not stop taking Keppra without first talking to your doctor, even if you feel better. If you stop taking Keppra suddenly, you may have increased seizures. Tell your doctor if you have new or worsening seizures.

You may have thoughts about suicide while taking Keppra. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.
Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Carry an ID card or wear a medical alert bracelet stating that you are taking Keppra, in case of emergency. Any doctor, dentist, or emergency medical care provider who treats you should know that you are taking Keppra. Levetiracetam can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Q: Is Keppra and Lexapro safe to take together?
Currently I’m on 750mg keppra and 10mg lexapro daily. Anyone taking something similar or known someone who has taken these?
I use the Keppra because I have a history of epilepsy but my seizures have only occured when I’m sleeping and it’s been 10 years since I’ve had a seizure.

A: Do you have Epilepsy?
Go to epilepsy.com, they have a chat there where you can talk to people that have epilepsy and find out what meds they take and get info from them about side effects and other things.
Myspace have epilepsy groups too but not chats

Good luck

Q: Please enlighten me anout medicine for anti convulsant Keppra and how it is administrated to patient of 13 y/o?
the [patient is 13 y/o and weighs 80 kgs, she is a mental retarded and high triglyceride, Is this safe for her? what about if she has fever will the paracetamol be safe for her also> what is the best medication for her convulsion or seizure ? it attacks everytime she has a very slight fever? please help me?

A: Make certain with the doctor that the fever and high triglycerides are not related to some other medication or condition that is not addressed. Vaccinations can sometimes cause a mild fever, an antihistamine might prevent this, something to discuss with your doctor.

Be careful in that continued use of paracetamol over 10 days can lead to serious liver damage, minimize its use, the commericals for these types of products are for maximal sales, not to inform as to proper use.

Below is the FDA link regarding the drug, including dosing information.

http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2007/021035s057,021505s013lbl.pdf

Keep in mind the patient information included, it states that behavioural changes including aggression can occur with Keppra.

Keppra is add on therapy for seizures, look at the studies, the placebo effect is large, it really does not seem that impressive, but if you need it you need it.

There are things that can trigger seizures that should be avoided, these include:
caffeine
alcohol , even very small amounts found in cough/cold products (actually it is after the alcohol leaves the body the brain is more prone to seizures for several days).

rapidly flashing lights, including rapid image changes from TV/Movies/Videos

some other drugs like antipsychotics can lower the seizure threshold (unrelated to this they can cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome, that causes fever).

As listed on the fda website 20mg/kg/day is usual starting dose and the dose can gradually be raised up to a maximal of 60mg/kg/day.

Below is a Merck Manual link you might want to explore, its sort of a medical textbook, it can be trusted, but keep in mind a drug company publishes it:

Q: Does levetiracetam works exactly like keppra?
I have seizures and this is my first time taking levetiracetam because i usually take Keppra. So i was just wondering if levetiracetam is the same thing as Keppra.

A: Yes. Keppra just went generic and levetiracetam is the generic name.

Q: keppra and have you taken it for bipolar?
i also take lithium, effexor, xanax. and a few days ago the doc prescibed keppra and i am scaared to take it. i tried respirdal months back and almost did go insane. any answers would help.

A: Please read this response. It took me ages to write, and I have Bipolar so I understand *hugs*

First of all I haven’t tried Keppra, but that doesn’t matter. Even if I had, I couldn’t guarantee that it won’t leave you with unpleasant side effects. I have Bipolar 1, and I’m entering 4th year clinical psychology. Trust me, they don’t know shit all about psychiatric medications or their long term consequences – particularly Bipolar and anxiety meds (they still need to come up with anxiety meds that work). To add to the confusion, they all seem to affect everyone differently.

But I can offer you some advice based on my personal experience (but I’m not a doctor so consult your doctor before changing anything)…

…anti-depressants are often not a great idea for us Bipolars, and effexor in particular can cause anxiety and some peculiar mixed episodes and psychotic thoughts even when you’re depressed. I suffered from over a year of psychosis because I was taking too many meds (the celexa and seroquel were the culprits). I am also terrified of taking psychiatric meds after that experience.

If you’re not feeling stable I’d be more inclined to cut out anything that may be aggitating you rather than throw more meds at you, starting with the effexor. Ask your doctor about it. You will experience withdrawal, so try it gradually (with his/her ok). After you figure out whether the effexor helps or harms you, then you can worry about dealing with the other symptoms.

Just make sure that whatever you do, stick with a mood stabilizer, and limit your xanax use as much as possible because benzodiazapines are very addictive and they are not meant for long term use.

The most important thing that you can do to get well is to come to terms with the fact that you will have to work harder than everyone else just to function like everyone else. It’s heatbreaking, I know. Medications may help to take the edge off, but they won’t cure you. Only YOU can cure you. Exercise, eat well, socialize, keep yourself busy, take vitamins, find an outlet, and be skeptical of quick fixes.

The more you can control your symptoms using your own strength and patience with yourself and loved ones, then the easier it will become. Eventually you’ll be so proud of yourself your confidence will go up, and you will gain even more strength, and you may find that you’ll need the meds even less. Getting back that sense of control is key. Make the changes in your life that you keep meaning to make but never get around to doing, DO the things that you have always wanted to do, accept your quirks, and experience the world.

You will spring back from this, I promise. You always will, and even if you feel fragile, you will be stronger every time. Tell yourself that every day.

Good luck to you :)

Q: Can I take Keppra and Tylenol cold together?
My son takes Levetiracetam and he has a cold. I wanted to know would he be ok taking the two meds together.

A: Tylenol clearly states on the back of it that it may be dangerous to take more than one prescription drug so ask your doctor to see

Q: Looking for a decongestive medicine safe to take with phenobarbital and keppra which I take for my seizures.?
psydophedrin (not sure about the spelling) seems to trigger my seizures.

A: Avoid decongestant tablets especially pseudoephedrine if you are on these medicines. Your best bet is to use an inhalant or a decongestant nasal spray ( though nasal spray should be used only for a few days). Ask your pharmacist – he will know your medicine history and will be able to recommend the best remedy
