Q: Where can I buy the generic drug of lamictal?

A: In the US, you can only get the 5mg and 25mg strengths in generic. In Canada and elsewhere you can get most strengths. So, if in the US, you can order on line thru a Canadian pharmacy. An alternative is to go to Glaxo-Smith-Klein’s website and look up their patient assistance program. They discount med prices for those w/o insurance below a certain income.

Q: Can St John’s Wort (and other antidepressants) be taken with Lamictal?
I’ve suffered depression a couple of times in the past and couldn’t take antidepressants as I was on Phenytoin at the time. I’ve now been weened of of that drug and onto Lamictal instead. I know St John’s Wort can be bought over the counter so is it safe for me to take?
Sorry, I should have mentioned that Phenytoin and Lamictal are anticonvultants for epilepsy.

A: Don’t ask us! Ask either 1) Your Doctor or 2) Your Pharmacist, who is going to be even more knowlegable about drug interactions than an MD.

But don’t ask people here. Probably not to many Pharmacists about. You could get in trouble if some doofus says “Oh, yeah, sure, I used tons of St. John’s Wort with Lamictal and didn’t hurt me none.”

Q: can lamictal or lithium cause weight gain?
I was diagnosed as bipolar in October 2009 and have been on a bunch of meds since. I started with Lamictal in about Dec 09, and then eventually added prozac. Didn’t like the prozac so I’ve been on lithium for about a month and a half. Thing is, I have somehow gained 10 pounds. I believe I started gaining in Dec. 09. Now I’m not going to lie, I used to drink alcohol and go out quite a bit, and of course eat unhealthy to get rid of the hangovers, but the weight gain also started around the time I started lamictal. I also work in retail and december is a CRAZY month for retail and I was eating mall food every day and constantly seeking caffeine in starbucks and energy drinks and mountain dews.

I’m really frustrated, because not only are my meds not really helping me anymore (I just feel really sad and depressed and angry all the time) but I’ve gained these 10 lbs and went from a size 2 or 3 to a 5 or a 6……..and I know people will say thats not a huge deal..but it is when none of your clothes fit, you feel unattractive, and you can’t afford to buy new jeans and shorts!!!!!!!

I’ve read that lamictal doesnt normally cause weight gain, but it can. As for the lithium…I have no clue, still trying to figure out if it caused my swollen eye which I still have right now. I also just started some thyroid shit called cytomal or something. I don’t know, I give up on ever feeling good about myself!!

Any advice or thoughts/opinions?

And YES I am talking to my psychiatrist about this!!

A: I don’t know about the lamictal, but I can tell you right now lithium doesn’t make you gain weight. It can make you lose weight, but not gain weight.

Q: Please help. My son is on Lamictal 100 m.g. for months and is no showing signs of mania???
What should I do??? YES, Im sure he is taking his meds. As lamictal has no side effects, he is taking his meds willingly. He is sleeping very little if at all, talking fast, argumentative, buying stuff and on the phone constantly bartering things to sell on EBay? Any advice will be so appreciated.
He is 22 years old.

A: You don’t mention his age, but Lamictal 100mg is actually a low dose. Maybe you should consult his Dr. for a possible increase. I had to recently cut my dosage in 1/2 due to cost and now I’m having periods of mania that were controlled before. I know he is miserable so see the Dr. soon. As far as no side affects on Lamictal, I’m not sure I agree with that.

Q: Can Lamictal cause side effects similar to bipolar symptoms?
I was diagnosed about 3 years ago with Bipolar disorder. I wasn’t until after I started taking Lamictal that I had my first bought with extreme racing thoughts and terrible trouble concentrating (Mania). Up until that point I had only had severe depression and extreme irritability. I questioned the diagnosis but continued to see the pdoc. Now that I take 5 different meds I am all but symptom free. The final symptom I am trying to overcome is social anxiety. But I still go back in my mind and wonder if the diagnosis was correct or if it was the meds that lead to my first manic breakdown. Thanks for the advice.

A: any medication can have the opposite action it is intended for discuss with your doctor your feelings thoughts if you think your doctor is not listening to you, you have the right to a second opinion

Q: I stopped taking Lexapro about a month or so ago and it was working great (along with Lamictal) but I had to?
stop taking it due to no insurance and to be honest I was feeling better (which I know is not a good reason to stop). Anyway, I have an appt. w/ my therapist in a few days to see if she can switch me to Celexa (I can buy that in generic) I started back on my Lexapro about 6 days ago and I feel HORRIBLE. I have felt hungover for the past two days (no alcohol involved). Is this normal? Should I quit taking it considering I’ve only been on it again for about a week? I feel like I’m sick ALL DAY LONG (this is the second day like this). My appt. is in 5 days from today. HELP!
I know what I did was not good but I did taper ON and OFF as I’ve been on and off SSRI’s for years. Thanks for any advice received.

A: From what I gather, it might take a couple weeks to adjust. Same may hold for Celexa. As for which one… if Lexapro worked before, there’s a good chance it will again. Celexa is an unknown. The wild card is if you are at the edge of the bipolar spectrum where antidepressant poop out is common. In that case, the change to Celexa might be the way to go. Sorry, this post probably just adds more confusion.

Q: Need psychological help and input in regard to depression and anxiety. I?
Started feeling real fatigued 8 years ago. Found out I have viral immune disease I got over in Nam. Diagnosed Bi-polar and disabled. NO depression meds have ever worked. Wife about to give up(went back to Canada for week or so can’t blame her)I can hardly leave my room. One of my twin boys hung himself last year, I can’t get over it. Going to clinic next week to see a doctor but..havn’t had medical care since wife was laid off…..I feel like I can’t hardly do diddly. I know you folks have a cross to bear and you don’t want to hear no whiner esspecially without no cheeze. I have alot to be grateful for, home, wife, kids grown and doin ok……There has to be some meds out there that could help me out of this cloud. It is allmost like, I could really buy the farm if I could make it look accidental…..but I don’t think thats sane..Kids would hate me forever so would wife. Lamictal didnt seem towork, I hope I can get the right meds next week. Could lithium help? They haven’t tried that?

A: There are so many drugs out there. Before you go to the clinic write down all the drugs and drug combinations you have been prescribed, and any effects or side effects they had on you. Lithium stabilizes the mood moods so you are neither depressed or manic but can make a lot of people feel numb. You sound like you are currently having more trouble with the depressive side than the manic side. Sometimes a combination of drugs can work like lithium with Prozac or any other combo. Don’t give up, you may have to try many things before they work, and don’t forget that these drugs can take a month to two months to really start working. Feel free to click on my avatar and send a message to my email if you want to ask me anything specific. I am not a doctor but have experience and education in this area and will do my best to help.

Q: Is there a catch 4 getting my (expensive) meds from Canada? It’s even cheaper than what I save w/insurance here
I am on Lamictal for my epilepsy and it is definitely a heavy financial burden. Without insurance I would have to pay around 400 dollars for my monthly dosage and with insurance it goes down to 200. I just found out that I can buy the same amount for 160 w/out the insurance in Canada. Is there any catch to this. I know that people are going to tell me to keep the money in the country but being realistic this can save me a lot of financial troubles.

A: No problem, even though technically it’s not legal the border patrol tends to look the other way and you still need a prescription.

Q: Robitussin cough and congestion cough syrup question?..?
My wife has bronchitis and she takes regular medication called lexapro, lamictal, and seroquel for bipolar disorder. She recently was told to buy robitussin cough and congestion syrup for her throat. It says on the bottle not to take this with maoi’s (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) and certain drugs for depression and psychiatric emotional conditions. the cough syrup is just a cough suppressant and expectorant. is it ok to take this syrup with the medications.

A: I am not a doctor but I did some studies with dextromethorphan (the active ingredient in Robitussin DM) in college and would think that it would be ok for her to take any Robitussin formula (or other cough medication) that doesn’t have dextromethorphan in it. Dextromethorphan is a narcotic and should definately be avoided while on other medications that mess with your brain chemistry.

At the very least. Talk to your pharmacist. They should tell you if there is a direct connection to your question.

Q: Mature girls only, doctors?
I’m 14, And i live in Australia, Qld. Lately, ive noticed my vagina has a really bad smell to it, im not sure if i have an infection or anything,, it used to always be itchy when i was a toddler and such, and still does get itchy, im not a virgin, i lost it a few weeks ago to my current boyfriend, and im not sure if i could have contracted anything, first time was unprotected but he didn’t cum inside of me.

Its embarrassing and i hate it, im too scared to go to my mum or any adult. i honestly just cant do it.

Is there any over the counter products i can buy for this?
I have epilepsy and take Lamictal, so i cant just go buy anything from the shelf without knowing if i can take it with the medication im on.

please help.
no smart remarks please.

thankyou.
Okay.
No. My boyfriend is not alot older than me, he is one year older than me. He’s 15. I’m 14. My birthday is only 2 months after his. And ‘current’ boyfriend.. He’s my third, and only serious one, i plan on staying with him for a very long time, and so does he, no one may understand but, we know within ourselves that we could grow together, we’ve known each other for about a year, and have gotten to know each other very well, etc.
I practically call his mum, mum as well, same as for him.

I’m only 14, yes, 16 is the legal age for heterosexual intercourse in Australia, but this isn’t your choice, we only done it without protection, once.

I know great amounts of information on STD’s, STI’s, etc etc. I’ve known for ages, long before i had sex, or even thought about it.

Nothing had happened to me when i was younger,
i was just itchy there, that’s all, not sure why.
I use a cream for thrush currently, i use to use it, but then i stopped,
i started again tonight to see if it

A:

The odds are that you have bacterial vaginosis, a bacterial infection which is easily treated (I don’t know the pharmacy laws in Australia, in the USA it would require a physician’s prescription).

However, given the timing of the onset of your infection after having unprotected intercourse, you really NEED to get a gyn exam performed to rule out sexually transmitted infections.

Please think about having unprotected intercourse.

It can have life long repercussions.

Q: which med is making me sick???
I started taking Loestrin on Sunday, I currently take Wellbutrin, lamictal and cymbalta for depression/moods.
I started crying for 2 days and extreme fatigue/nausea/pain in chest, back ache, so, I stopped the Loestrin because the paperwork does say it can cause depression to get worse, and sickness, THEN, I think I’ve forgotten to put my Cymbalta in with my other pills and maybe have missed days of it???
I buy my medicines in bulk from Canada, so counting pills really doesn’t help me.
Not usually this irresponsible with my medications, but, stress at work/home/diabetic son lately, has made me a little “scatter-brained”.
What do you think most likely is causing the sickness??

A: Lamictal causes muscle aches and headaches, and Cymbalta can cause nausea.

Screwing around with your medications can cause all sorts of problems.

Q: Besides working out and watching the right foods is there any other way to successfully lose weight?
I would like to lose 20 pounds…I just started taking chromium….I just got off seroquel (med for bipolar) which I gained weight from…is there any other way to help me lose weight….I just joined a gym and starting to watch what I eat now that I’m no longer on a med that made me feel like I’m constantly starving….It only took 6 weeks to gain …a norm w/ seroquel…I need to lose it fast because my clothes don’t fit and I don’t want to buy bigger clothes…any other way to speed up my weight…I am on lamictal so I can’t take alot of diet aids…

A: Those 2 are the main thangs. I know it sucks, but there are no shortcuts. There is no miracle vitamin or supplement that will make you lose weight the healthy way, much less will it let you keep it off! When I finally realized that, I lost 25 pounds in 2-3 months doing these things:

Only drink water or fat free milk, get lots of monounsaturated fats (nuts, olive oil, fish) and omega-3’s and 6’s, and only eat whole grain and whole wheat carbs so you get lots of fiber. Try to avoid the things with complex carbs (white rice, sugar, soda) and use Splenda/Equal as a sweetener instead of sugar. Also try to avoid saturated fats (butter, cake, fried foods, fatty meats like chicken skin, bbq ribs, etc) and instead, intake as many fruits and vegetables as possible.

Having sufficient vitamins does help you with your energy levels and your weight, even cravings! Check this site out for what each vitamin does and what foods to find it in: http://www.healthchecksystems.com/vitamins.htm

How often are you exercising? I dropped the weight by doing 30 minutes of cardio a day, 7 days a week and strength training. Use the gym’s elliptical. That works WONDERS – better than running alone because you’re toning your arms and legs at the same time. It’s also easier on your joints. You burn off an entire meal in an hour.

Pair that with weights because muscle needs more calories to maintain itself than fat does a day. So your metabolism is much higher even when you’re sitting around, just because your body has more muscle.

However, studies have shown that squeezing in 30 minutes of exercise still isn’t as good as someone who’s just on their feet all day. Try to do both exercising and being up and about. Instead of sitting in front of the TV, do situps or squats, or go outside and play with your dog, whatever it is that’s fun and keeps you on your feet. I always take the stairs instead of the elevator, and I make myself take a walk with my boyfriend while we chat.

Also, studies have shown that if you drink a glass of wine a day, eat almonds/peanuts (NOT roasted), drink coffee or tea, you burn extra.

Keep a log of all the calories you eat a day. Studies have shown you lose double the weight because it keeps you on track. I always set a limit for the day. When I want to reach for that donut, I’m like “But that means I’ll only be able to eat 200 calories for lunch or dinner, which AIN’T gonna happen.” Keeps me in check.

Good luck honey.

Q: What should I do? Bipolar?
I went to the doctor and I was hospitalized for nine days. I felt because I was taking two medications. Now I don’t have a prescription coverage to buy one of my medicine. My doctor told me this medicine is more important. Furthermore, I am feeling depressed, and I am having trouble studying. I am studying for my medical school entrance. I am planning to take it this summer. Today I tried to study but I was too depressed.

Is this normal? Sometimes I feel like I can just snap out of it. At the same time, I feel I have no control over my mood. I am taking lamictal but I need my other medication. I started to feel like I did before
What should I do? I will apply for an assistance program but it will take two weeks to complete. How should I get the med for the mean time. I need a month supply. My doctor could not give me samples.

A: Can your doctor refer you to a colleague who might have samples? Or can your doctor prescribe another similar medication that you would have coverage for? I would think that your doctor would do what s/he could to make it possible for you to have the meds you need. Good luck.

Q: I have had acne since age 11 and am now 40 and still having it, any suggestions?
I have had acne for a long time. But as I get older it gets worse. The medication I take is part of the problem too. Lamictal. I wash my skin twice a day, I was using Proactiv but now it doesn’t seem to work so I switched to Acne Free. I don’t have the small pimples anymore, it’s the cyst ones. I have a hard time looking at myself in the mirror sometimes. So yday I bought the Acne Free Severe to try. Anyone out there with info.?

A: Clinical trials on Proactiv and AcneFree are ongoing, with no official approval of either. (See http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00419523 to participate.) There’s some indication that what’s happened to you–it works for a while, then doesn’t–happens to many users.

I suspect you probably know what you ought to be doing, but it costs both time and money. Have your doctor recommend a board-certified dermatologist. See him or her. Do what they say, from skin care to medications, faithfully for at least 90 days.

The people I’ve known with severe cystic acne, both teens and adults, have improved dramatically when they finally seek professional medical care instead of various over-the-counter remedies. They say it’s worth it, even though for many their visits and medications were not covered by insurance.

A good dermatologist may also offer treatment which can minimize the appearance of scarring, if you have any.

I hate to see you hating the person in the mirror when there is a solution. Please, call your doctor and ask for a referral. (And make sure to look at your eyes–I guarantee you that no matter what your skin is doing, your eyes are beautiful.)

Q: Lying to the doctor for hallucinations?
I finally went to a psychiatrist 2 months ago after painfully living with bipolar disorder type 1 for the past 4 years.

He tried Lithium with Lamictal and Straterra for my bipolar and adhd. Didn’t work so now he put me on Zoloft and Concerta.

Well its been a week, and I haven’t see a difference, but putting that aside, when the doctor asked me if I have any hallucinations i said no.

I do hear things in my head like people talking outside my room when everyone is really sleeping. Thats auditory, I do have taste and smell hallucinations but im not sure if it has more to due with memories( I would be eating like a milky way bar and then i would think about how I was with a girl when I bought that a milky way last time, and then somehow ill taste or smell what we had for dinner the night i got the last milky way bar) So far, I haven’t had visual hallucinations, I do see like shadows but its usually the floaties in my eyes. SOMETIMES though I feel like a light flash on the corner of my eye.

Well I lied in fear I am going to be labeled schizophrenic. I then looked online that this might be something called scizoaffectie disorder?

Should I tell my doctor or do I have nothing to worry about? I heard you gotta take A LOT of different combos of medicine for schizoaffective disorder, and im scared to talk to my doc about it when I see him next Saturday.

A: I have the same thing. Bipolar Disorder Type 1 with psychosis (I’m taking control of it).

I am now in Lamictal only, and was on Seroquel for a while to calm down the hallucinations. I also heard things just like you did, or my name being called. Sometimes visual. Seroquel sucks big time, but it helped me get rid of the problems. It may not mean that you are schizophrenic, but that you may have psychosis which causes similar symptoms as schizophrenia.

You definitely need mood stabilizers, but you may also need thought organizers. Seroquel is effective, but again, the side effects suck. It knocks you out big time for about 12 hours or more, it weakens you, and raises your body temperature, plus it may have worse side effects if you’re unlucky.

I recommend you sleep more and relax more. And try to stop negative thoughts from becoming an obsession. I feel your pain, it’s really hard. There is a reason why people with Bipolar Disorder have a higher chance of suicide. The demons can wreak havoc on you. Make the best to control them.

Do not lie to your psychiatrist about anything, Anything. Do not take any bad substances, and stop taking anything with caffeine if you do. Caffeine has a negative effect on us.
