Q: Does the headache with lamictal go away eventually?
Also is it better to take lamictal at night or in the morning? Because I am not on any sleep aides now I do not sleep very much or very well and am trying to eliminate anything that may be keeping me awake. If lamictal taken at night causes wakefulness I would want to avoid that. Does anyone have any experience with this? I have looked online at everything I can find and am still in the dark.

A: My headaches went away after about two weeks (I think; I get frequent headaches as is, so I can’t say for sure). I take it morning and night without difficulty, but if you’re only one once a day, sure, try taking it in the morning. For what it’s worth … http://epilepsy.emedtv.com/lamictal/lamictal-and-insomnia.html You may have read that already, but it does suggest that Lamictal can significantly mess with your sleeping. (Talk to your doc first, though, or at the very least inform him/her that’s what you’re trying. It shouldn’t be a big deal, but it’s always good to make sure there wasn’t a specific reason s/he wanted you taking it at night.)

Hope that helps some. I haven’t had many long-term side effects with Lamictal, so I don’t have a whole lot of experience to speak from.

Q: What other drugs/meds can be consumed while taking Lamictal?
My friend has recently been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. She was given Lamictal….currently she uses Nuvaring as her birth control, and she was told that this medicine would not interfere with Lamictal. What about other drugs? Such as Advil, tylenol, nyquil/dayquil, what about smoking pot? Also, if you are on this medication, should you not consume alcohol at all? Ive searched online and havent really found any clear answers….thanks for the advice!

A: here are some websites to look up meds…

Q: is it okay to take valerian root with lamictal?
For the past few weeks it’s been very difficult for me to sleep. I did some research for herbal remedies and discovered that valerian root can help with this. I just started taking lamictal (25mg) this past week for bipolar II.

Will valererian root have any type of reaction with the lamictal? I’ve looked online for answers including webmd.com and many forums and have come up with mixed answers. I asked my doctor about it and he didn’t even know what valerian root is so I couldn’t get straight answer… he just wanted to prescribe me something else for sleep, which I declined.

Any information would be appreciated, thank you.

A: You really should avoid valerian, especially if you have bipolar and are just starting a new medication. The two substances should have any drug interaction BUT it could potentially worsen your problem especially when you are just starting new drugs. I assume you are titrating the Lamictal dose up over the next several weeks?

Valerian is also not an approved treatment, there have not been sufficient studies about risks and efficacy not to mention that the quality and actual dose varies between makers.

Are you seeing a psychiatrist? If you are not you really do need to see a psychiatrist. It is also VERY important to get your sleeping under control since insomnia can trigger an episode. The best sleeping medications are Restoril (temazepam), Ambien/Ambien CR (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone), and Imovane (zopiclone), which is not available in The US.

I can understand wanting to use a “natural” product but the truth is a medication is much safer and better understood, you also really need to get control of your sleep quickly and a hypnotic will be the best, and you may only need it for 7-10 days. Most beliefs about sleeping pills are either myths or residual beliefs when when barbiturates where used.

I should also say that hypnotics are very misunderstood, some (not all) do have a slight risk of abuse however if you have no history of substance abuse (particularly alcohol or barbiturates) then the risk is almost zero. Some drugs that are not addictive at all are available however they are also not well tested and the testing that has been down indicates they are not very effective and many of the drugs are antidepressants that are sedating and it is probably not a good idea to take an antidepressant since in may cause a manic episode.

But please don’t use valerian and take your doctor up on the offer of a medication.

Q: Generic Lamictal hair loss?
I’ve been taking Lamictal 200mg for about 2 years i think. I just switched to the generic brand of lamictal because it’s cheaper. since I started taking it, only about a week, i’ve been loosing more hair. I know lamictal can cause hair loss. My sister was taking lamical and lost a ton of hair and had to stop taking it because of that. I’ve also read alot online about people who loose there hair from lamictal. I havn’t had this problem for the two years i’ve been on it. But now on the generic I’ve noticed more hair loss. So I was wondering if anyone has had simular problems with switching to the generic brand?

A: i have heard about hair loss in people who use lamictal for a long time, but maybe the problem is in the generic medication??! My wife have used Dilantin and Lamictal of this generic pharmacy http://pharmacynextdoor.com/order_anti_convulsants_en-us.html, and does not experience any troubles.

Q: Question about Seroquel and Lamictal..?
My step-daughter has been put on Seroquel 300mg and Lamictal 300mg. I’ve looked these meds up online and they say that they are not to be used to children under the age of 18. Now, how can a Dr. prescribe these drugs to a 10 year old girl? If there are any doctors out there that can explain it to me or any other parents whose children might be on this.. Her mother won’t tell her father and I anything. If anybody can answer this, please do. Thank You.

A: I sympathize with you and can understand your concerns, espcially for someone who is only 10 years old. If possible, you really should get a 2nd opinion from another psychiatrist. I assume your step-daughter has big mood swings (bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression).

Before seeing the current MD or a new one, there are a few facts that may help you. Although a drug company may say a drug should not be used for someone under 18, that may not always be true. After a company prints out a report, doctors discover newer ways to use a drug. Also, the info I saw online said that Lamictal can be used on chldren and teens. However, Seroquel is usually not used to those under 18.

Some general information on these meds:
Seroquel can be used for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and some other disorders. I have major depression and I was on seroquel for two months just to help me sleep.

Lamictal is used for bipolar, epilepsy and a few other disorders. I have been using it successfully for over a year.

Finally, the dosages of 300 mg for both drugs for someone only 10 years old is high. However, it is not (in my non-medical opinion) extremely high.

Once again, I really think a 2nd opinion would help. You show 10 patients to 10 different doctors, and you will likely come up with very different recommendations for treatment. If possible, consult with the current doctor. It’s your step-daughter. You have the right to know as much as possible about her treatment. Don’t settle for crap like “I’m the doctor. I will make the decisions.” I hope this helps.

Q: lamictal 25mg??
hey room… went to the doc yesterday. he added a new med to my regime. lamictal. anyone out there got any stories, or info. i looked it up online but wanted to know more about it in a personal way.

this was prescribed by my neurologist. he told me he thinks its MDD (major depressive disorder?) where as my family doc says he believes it is BD. either way i have been referred out to yet another doctor.

i am currently on lexapro 20mg , xanax 1mg and now this. i am just curious as to if this medicine will work or am i wasting my time?
BPD (my bad… forgot the P) bipolar disorder

A: I was on I believe 5 medications simultaneously, 4 of them for bipolar. Lamictal was one of them… I can’t say it was the miracle drug, because I was on so many other things, too. But when it was the only mood stabilizer I was on, it worked quite well to manage the highs. I still hit major lows, though. Once I sort of reached an equilibrium, I decided to quit all of my meds and fight the bipolarity my own way. Uhhmmmm yeah, didn’t work. I sort of had a grudge against the Lamictal, and I think it was because of the shape of the tablet… the shield makes it seem like it should protect you, but really your conscience and your unstable mind are working behind the scenes, where no drug can truly gain full access. It can’t protect you… it can help with leveling of moods, but it can’t protect you. Now I am just on lithium and celexa, possibly throwing something else into the mix in the near future,

It may work for you better than it did for me. I hope it does. The search for the right med combo is frustrating as f-cking hell.

Good luck!

By the way, I was initially diagnosed with major depression, as well.

Q: i’m taking 25 mg lamictal every night, and i wanted to know if anyone knows what the side effects are?
i dont want to hear what you’ve found online, i want to know if anyone knows from experience what 25 mgs will do. they will up my dosage to two 25 mg pills a night in a month or two. what will it do to me??
ok now i’m kinda scared….

A: Nothing but help you sleep beter, and be calmer and more focused during the day from taking it at night.
I was scred too when I got mine bumped up. Don’t sweat it, it’s a good thing,
Just try it tonight, really, just take two pills instead of one, nothing might even happen, but the worst is you will fall asleep faster.

Don’t read all about side effects, these happen to like 1 in every 2 thousand people or more. And no matter what the patient said, or even if it wasn’t the truth, it still had to be written and recorded.

The only thing it’s ever done to me, was sometimes get a sick stomach, but I take a Tums or two, and it goes away.

Relax, you will not get all that crap.

I have a lot of anxiety, and understand how your scared to try it, but believe me, it’s all fine.

Q: Please help I have Lamictal Acne?
So I have been taking Lamictal for about 2 months now and I am only on 50mg. I already have the Lamictal Acne. Mainly on my face. (Cheeks, Chin, and between my eyes on my forehead.) It gets worse when I am in the sun. (And no I dont plan to stay out of the sun) I have seen the doctor, my appt was today. He stills wants me to continue it since it works. He wants to go up to 75mg then 100mg and possibly to 150mg… I have never had an issue with Acne ANYWHERE on my body. I have great skin. Flawless complexion normally. Always have. I went to the tanning bed and a couple other bumps maybe one or two popped up on my arm and my chest.. I can possible deal with it if it is not going to get worse. But it is starting to itch. (May be the tanning bed) I have looked up info online and one thing that bothers me the most is the scarring!! Can you get acne scars just by having acne?? No …. Only if you scratch right? …. Some one please give me some solid information. Not just your opinion. I would appreciate it so.
I have read Lamictal Acne is totally different from regular acne. Usually normal acne treatments do not help… If I continue to take this med will this go away??

A: If you are uncomfortable with the side effects then you don’t have to keep taking that medication. Just tell your doctor that yes it works but the side effects are bothersome and you’d like to try something else now.

Chances are it won’t go away. I mean, it’s been two months and you’re on an incredibly LOW dose already. =/ Sorry.

Q: I’m trying to identify a pill and cant find it anywhere online!?
I went to refill a perscription for my anti-eplileptic /anti- seizure medication Lamictal. I have been taking the generic of it ”Lamotrigine” for a few months now. They are peach colored diamond shaped ,scored on one side. 100mg. 3x per day. When I saw my pharmacist to get more I discovered after I got home that the pills contained in the bottle did not look like anything I have taken before. I already took one this morning ”trusting” it was another manufacturer but I don’t feel right. I cannot identify this pill anywhere online. does anyone know? It is small round, off white/pale yellow color scored on one side 22/1 and the other side RDY. Did they screw up and give me something that isnt mine. Does anyone know what is is I took. help!

A: That drug is made by Dr. Reddy, thus the RDY. The diamonds are made by Teva.

Q: withdrawal symptoms lamictal?
I ran out, and went 1 day without until I could get to the Dr., I was hating life, tired, sick, when I look up online doesn’t tell withdrawal symptoms, Dr just said it wasn’t advisable, didn’t really say much.

A: I’ve stopped taking Lamictal a thousand times but never got any side effects or withdraw symptoms. I don’t know what to say. However, when I stop taking Effexor for even a few hours off sceduele I feel like crap.

Q: Question about Lamictal?
I’ve heard of the rash and looked it up online.I have an extremely itchy scalp in the morning and then it stops itching(it’s not lice).I also have hives on the top of my legs,up the side of my torso,on my butt, and a rash on the side of my neck.Should I wait to go to E.R.and see if it gets worse?

A: You need to call your doctor that prescribed this medication and tell him the symptoms you are having. He will either want to see you or will prescribe something to alleviate your symptoms and tell you whether you should stop this medication or not. Call him now. Also, benadryl will help with all of your symptoms – use as directed on the box – until you can reach your physician. The hives may take several days to go away and you will need to continue the benadryl until they are gone.

Q: Wanting to lose 55 pounds by Christmas?
Okay so I lose weight pretty fast (i have a high metabolism, but i used to binge eat a LOT to deal with emotional stuff, but now i’ve got that under control xD) and i’m aiming to lose AT LEAST 55 pounds by Christmas (this would get me to 150 pounds at 5′8″). I’d like to be at least to 170 by my birthday, October 12th.

Anyways, this is my weight loss program:

Eating:
Weight Watchers Online

Pills:
Lamictal (for Bipolar)
Hydroxicut
Creatine (pill form, from GNC)

Exercise:
One hour of cardio a day (either treadmill or elliptical)
A few of the 10 minute solution videos

So, will i be able to reach my weight loss goals in time? Thanks :)

A: Here a link to a fantastic weight loss website;
www.sparkpeople.com
its free, has lots of info, practical advice and support. I have been a member for about a month now and have lost quite a bit of weight the right way (healthy eating, excerise etc) It really is a fantasic site, and I couldnt have done it alone :)

I think the healthy rate of weight loss it a pound a week so while I guess its possible, I’m not sure you’ll be able to keep it off. But in any case, Good luck to you!

Q: How do anticonvulsants effect neuroplasticity?
I”m specifically interested in lamotrigine (Lamictal) but also anticonvulsants in general.
I have tried searching online, on PubMed…. but didn’t find any direct answers, only some implications onf glutamate inhibiton that prevents o over excitatory effect due of too much glutamate. That seems to me to be neuroprotective, but does it also mean it promotes neuroplasticity?
In other places I have read about glutamate and neuroplasticiy, I have got an impression that it promotes it.

So, is there a SPECCIFIC amount of glutamate needed to promote neuroplasticity-no too much and not too little? What role do anti cocnvulsants play in all that?
I( found only one study where it says about their possible neuroprotective properties, but nothing about neuroplasticity).

Thanks a lot!

A: Lamotrigine reduces glutamate release and modulates AMPA receptors (a form of excitatory amino acid receptor – glutamate is one type of EAA). What does this mean in terms of EFFECTING or AFFECTING neuroplasticity…no one really knows.

As a VERY general rule anything that reduces EAA release or blocks its effect will reduce excitatory neurotoxicity.

Since EAA’s generally PROMOTE neuroplasticity…As a VERY general rule anything that blocks them might be expected to reduce neuroplasticity. However, if it blocks specific subtypes of EAA receptors the effect could be just the opposite. In addition, lamotrigine’s modulation of AMPA receptors may impact neuroplasticity. See attached reference for details. More research is needed.

Q: Hi-Im really concerned about the meds by husband is on. He has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder about?
a 1 1/2 yrs ago and after several different medicines prescribed, we finally found Lamictal to work really well for him. He is also ADHD and was given Vyvanse 6 months ago. He says it has really helped him and I have noticed nothing negative really except for the fact that he urinates ALL the time and has at lease 4-5 bowel movements a day. (I have told him to talk to his DR about this but he refuses). I just found another prescription written to him for VISTARIL? I looked it up online and it says can be used for anxiety? Im upset he has not told me about this medicine as he did not tell me about Vyvanse originally either. ( He says he doesn’t wantme to worry)…..These 3 medicines together-Vistaril, Lamictal and Vyvanse, is there cause to worry? I sometimes feel like Docs are so quick to just prescribe, prescribe without truly looking at what is best for the patient and their future….What is your opinion on this????? Bad mix or should be ok?

Thank you!!!!
Btw, for those of you who wish to answer on if I should stay with my husband or not b/c he has mental illness, I have made a choice to marry through sickness and death-he is a loving, kind hearted man who needs to be loved and understood by his wife. Please keep personal opinions of our “marriage” to yourself. Thanks.

A: I really dont know about the meds…. maybe a free doctor site could help you… or try dr.oz at oprah.com
I wanted to let you know about a free technique at www.emofree.com that people are healing this …. check it out if you want to…
I hate medications, and yeah, I think doctors overperscribe all the time… ridiculous…
a change in dietary habits, finding food sensativiities , etc. often help with all kinds of things like this, also see
michael thurmonds site
good ‘luck’
You might also investigate the treatment of bipolar in traditional chinese medicine…. they use herbal formulas and acupuncture…. here is the best site I know of www.ITMonline.org

Q: can i drink while on 1200 mg of lithium?
I’m not really a drinker at all, I’ve never been drunk in my life, but every now and then I get a frozen margarita or pina coloda when out with friends.

I’ve been on lithium for about two weeks now and just started taking 1200 mg last night. Tomorrow I’m going out with some friends and wanted to get a margarita but I’m a little nervous about doing so while on this med. I have drank while on lamictal and nothin happened at all, I also have had no side effects on lithium as of yet. (I read online lots of people who have lots of diff side effects)

Anyway jus wondering if its gonna be a bad reaction or jus one drink won’t hurt

A: You shouldn’t drink on lithium as it’s a salt, so staying hydrated is important and alcohol can dehydrate you, especially as you’ve only just started taking it. However one drink should be fine, i know people who drink whilst taking lithium, if your still concerned try reading the leaflet that came with your meds or research it online.
