Q: Does anyone have any information about the prescription drug LAMOTRIGINE?
A: Good day!
Lamotrigine is used for:
Treating certain types of seizures. It may be used alone or with other medicines. It may also be used to delay the occurrence of mood problems in certain patients with bipolar disorder. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant. Exactly how it works is not known.

Q: Is taking Lamotrigine(anti-epilepsy drug), safe for pregnant women?
This one was prescribed by my neurologist, but I still have seizures one in a while.
A: Lamotrigine may cause a higher risk of cleft palates in babies whose moms take it during pregnancy. Unfortunately, there is no anti-epiliepsy drug that has been found to be safe during pregnancy. But seizures can be worse than the side effects. Work with your neurologist to find a balance between side effects for your baby and the need to reduce seizures. If you don’t have seizures a lot, the doc may recommend going without meds while you are pregnant if you can.
Q: Who would be given the drug “lamotrigine”?
A: Lamotrigine is licensed as an anti-convulsant, but can be used off-license for the treatment of unipolar depression and bi-polar disorder.
Q: Shelf life of the drug Lamictal (Lamotrigine)?
Hi. I took a small dose of Lamictal for a period of time as a mood stabilizer. I discontinued because of “foggy” feelings and general ickyness. But after time, it’s become evident that I need to be “stabilized” again.
I have moved since this time, but still have a large quantity of the pills. They are a year old. I’m well aware of the titration thing and know my correct dosage.
Until I get into the doctor (a month) I would like to start back on the med.
Are they still good after a year? I can’t find the info anywhere!
I would just break the pills for 25, then 50, then 100. The stuff does not float my boat at all, lol!! But the folks around me would be happier ;p
A: yeah, my bottle of it says ‘use before 3/22/09′[i got it march 22nd...thats why it says it] and the pill bottle you have should of said that
see when i got on it, i was on the sample packet that had 5 weeks worth of pills….1st 2 weeks were 25mg, the next 2 weeks was 50, then the last week was 100mg. that last for a year, last month i went up to 150…
but when you see the doc, talk about the packet that starts off small. it’s pretty bad to take it right off the bat at 100mg [which is the lowest dosage of it]
so if i were you, i’d wait….but whatever floats your boat
Q: lamotrigine and weight loss in children is it a known side effect?
My daughter started taking lamotrigine as well as the exsisting epilim when she was 8 and her dose was doubled when she was 9. On the first dose her weight stayed level and now increased dose co-incides with weight loss she now weighs the same as she did when 7, 3 years ago. The information suggests the drug not suitable for under 12s but no reference is made to weight loss.
A: Anorexia is an infrequent side effect. After researching the effects in children, I would not let my child take it. There are other drugs for the same purpose.
Q: Sorry, meant to ask if there is a authorized GENERIC manufacturer of lamotrigine?
An authorized generic is chemically identical to a particular brand-name drug, but the brand-name manufacturer authorizes it to be marketed in a generic version.
A: I’ve never been prescribed Lamotrigine, nor do I know anyone who has, so all I could do was google the information; take the following for what it’s worth.
At http://bipolar-disorder.emedtv.com/lamotrigine/lamotrigine.html# the question is asked “Is there a generic version of Lamotrigine?” Following the link provided ( http://epilepsy.emedtv.com/lamictal/generic-lamictal.html ), we learn that there are at least five such manufacturers: Apotex Corporation, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Roxane Laboratories Inc., Sandoz, and Teva Pharmaceuticals. I hope this is the info you were seeking.
Q: Information on Lamotrigine?
Hay, my mother is has just recently been diagnosed with epilepsy and put on the drug Lamotrigine. First off, although I like to believe the doters there is no concrete evidence that she is really having epilepsy. Secondly, she does not have bipolar. She has been on antidepressants before but it was nothing serious. Thirdly, she is having some adverse affects from the drug. She has this headache that is about a 9 (coming from a woman who has given birth twice and has had multiple back surgeries, a 9 is really high) but goes to around a 7 on average, with 6 being the lowest it has gotten in two weeks. She also has the composure of a drunk woman. She slurs her words and can barely walk a straight line. She’s also developed mood swings when she didn’t have them before. She wants to stop taking it, would that be a good thing or not. I don’t really know what could happen if she just stops taking them. She’s on 150mg two time a day. Any information would help, or even a good place to find information.
Please and thank you,
Adam T
A: One of you really should discuss this with her doctor or maybe even try for a second opinion.

Q: can i take lamotrigine with fertility drugs if i get pregnant does folic acid slow down lamotrigine?
A: I agree, but often your local Pharmacist will have a better idea of what drugs interfere with other drugs than a Physician will.
I did find the page linked below though, with this information on it:
“Having epilepsy and taking anti-epileptic drugs does not prevent a woman from receiving fertility treatment. A few women may experience a small increase in the number of seizures when taking certain hormone-based fertility drugs.”
The same page suggested that Folic acid can interfere with the effectiveness of phenytoin and primidone but lamotrigine wasn’t mentioned.
Hope that helps!
Q: Question for people taking lamictal/lamotrigine?
Does anyone take this drug once a day? My doctor has started me on it and he is increasing the dose too quickly for my comfort and because I’m sectioned under the mental health act I feel that he won’t listen to me.
He has started me on 50mg twice a day and I’m thinking of only taking 50mg nightly. Does anyone else only take this drug at night?
A: i take mine once a day in the mornings usually. i started out on 25mg a day, right now taking 100mg a day. if you’re not comfortable with how fast he’s increasing your dosage, talk to him about it and if he doesn’t listen, find another doctor who will listen.
Q: Has anyone ever had a bad reaction to the generic brand of Lamictal?
I take Lamictal for seizures. I have medicaid and I was on the brand name for 2 months. After that, medicaid will no longer cover the brand name drug, so now i take the generic Lamotrigine. Has anyone ever had any reactions to the generic, such as upset stomach. I have been having issues with it, and I have a call into the doctor to see if they can get authorization to switch me back to the brand name, i was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else?
Yeah I always eat something when I take it.
A: From what I’ve read upset stomach is a common side effect. They say to take it with food. Have you been eating something when you take it? Most web sites say ” If you experience persistent upset stomach, vomiting, or loss of appetite contact your doctor immediately”. Depending on the price, he might prescribe you something else all together.
Q: For people on lamotrigine?
Have you noticed any change in your weight since taking lamotrigine? I’ve just started taking it for bi-polar and I’m scared of weight increase but I was told it was unlikely on this drug. Anyone had any experience?
A: Lamotrigine is weight-neutral, which means, it doesn’t cause weight gain.
Don’t worry. You won’t gain weight on it. It’s a good med.
Q: what’s your experience with Lamictal or Lamotrigine for treatment of depression?side effects?
I just got a presc. for lamotrigine to treat major depression and mood disorder. She’s starting me on only 25mg and increasing in 2 weeks…I do not have seizures…
There are many symptoms I’m having but the main one is that I”m constantly overwhelmed with my identity and problems. Also, My emotions rule my life, i’m impulsive. So overwhelmed to stagnation. Multitalented and very creative but can’t make anything happen. Short fuze. sleep way too much. PTSD. Borderline personality tendencies. I”m 37, beautiful, intelligent, extremely talented, funny (in groups) athletic, but miserable, depressed, scared to let anyone in my life (abusive relationships almost killed me), and single… Just some backround stuff…
I’m scared of this rash that may cause permanent scarring. And I’m scared of hair loss. sounds like it’s good for a lot of people with little side effects but the above sound horrible. I’ve been on a few antidepressants~ Effexor~ hated it!!, Lexapro, Zoloft, WEllbutrin.
Do you know if the brand drug has less strange side effects and is better effective? Or is it just that it’s bad to start with the brand then go to generic? When I was on brand Effexor then got a script for generic it sucked. But maybe it’s ok if you start with generic?
A: It’s weird but Lamictal (200mg) does help with my depression. I have psychotic major depression, GAD, a panic disorder, PTSD and mild OCD.
I have also tried Effexor, Lexapro, Zoloft and Wellburtin. The Effexor (300mg) helped quite a bit for about 2 1/2 year then it just stopped working.
Don’t be scared of the rash. They start you off on an extremely low dose to see if you get any signs of the rash, if not, you are not allergic and they will raise the dose slowly.
If it matters, I also take 30mg Abilify, 40mg Prozac, the Lamictal and 5mg of Xanax XR. I just started the Prozac so we are going to see if it helps once we raise the dosage.
Q: Can BiPolar Meds Cause Bipolar If Misdiagnosed?
It’s been 2 weeks since I started Lamotrigine and I (and my friends/family) have noticed that the bipolar symptoms are getting significantly worse. I’m not yet on a full dosage of this drug yet though. I wonder if I have been misdiagnosed and really only have depression but the new bipolar meds are giving me bipolar. Is this possible?
A: Happened to me, I have anxiety, they put me on abilify and I not only did I have a physical reaction (Terrible hot flashes, as well as a bringing out of torticollis in my neck), I also became extremely moody and irritated.
Q: How do cannabis, lamictal, and strattera interact?
Given that both Lamictal (lamotrigine) and Strattera (atomoxetine) are both new drugs, I am having a hard time finding information on their effects when used in combination with marijuana. I’ve heard nothing about Lamictal and very few experiences with Strattera. Some say atomoxetine causes major problems, while others claim it doesn’t have any effect. Can anyone shed any light on the subject?
Please note that I am skeptical of all drugs and this question is so I can improve my health, NOT so I can get more messed up!
Thanks.
A: Cannabis and alcohol can cause side affecs when mixed with many medications. You can google your question and see what it comes up with. Those side affects cause personality changes as well as decrease the effectiveness of some medications and makes others too affective.
Q: Side effects of Lamotrigine / lamictal?
I am on 25mg mornings and 50mg at night and I find that I am a bit giddy, bad headaches and not as much energy as usual. Does anyone know if these side effects go as my body gets more used to the drug??
I’m on my third week and two days ago had the dose increased from 25mg at night to 50mg. (actually I am meant to be on 50mg mornings as well but I’m only taking 25mg).
A: I noticed that when I first starting taking it I had some hypomanic side effects. I had the “weird energy” (as I call it) and the insomnia that I have with hypomanic phases. But after about a week on a dose, I would even out. Unfortunately I was supposed to increase my dose every week, so it would kind of start all over again. I did notice what helped a lot for my sleeping was to take a bigger dose in the morning and a lower one at night. Once I got to taking 150mg in the morning and 50mg at night, my moods evened out and the side effects went away. I now take 200mg in the morning and at night and have no problems. So your side effects should go away as soon as you get to a therapeutic level. If the side effects are too concerning though, talk to your doctor about it.
