Q: Has anyone taken Lamotrigine for bipolar issues?
My doctor seems to think I am bipolar because I used the word moody during our conversation. She gave me medication for it called Lamotrigine. Has anyone ever taken it and if so did it help? Did it cause you to feel worse or better? How did you feel, please describe.
Oh and please dont just write about how doctors prescribe medication left and right just for the money and it’s a conspiracy and blabla. I know how it works, I just want to know about the medications side effects and such, thank you.

A: If this was your GP and not a psychiatrist I would get a second opinion; bipolar is hard to diagnose and harder to treat. I was on lamotrigine for years for bipolar disorder and it helped, but wasn’t enough on its own. The only side effect I noticed was a little brain fog at higher doses.

Q: Can this medication be causing my blocked nose?
Every night before bed I take 300mg Lamotrigine and 300mg Seroquel. Within about 15-20 minutes after taking the medication my nose blocks up to the point where I have to put in nose drops to breathe. I thought this may have been a rebound blocked nose because I take the nose drops on a daily basis before going to bed (Oxymetazline) but if I lie down without taking the meds my nose doesnt block up. Bizarre. Could this really be because of the medication?

A: It’s possible, but before you get too far along, you need to discuss this with your physician. Using oxymetazoline drops on a regular basis will predictably produce rhinitis medacamentosa, which will only make matters worse. You need to find another alternative, and you’ll need your doctor’s help with that.

Q: I started taking medication in January. Could this cause a brown period 2 months later?
I started taking lamotrigine/lamictal for my epilepsy I just got diagnosed with. This month I have a brown period, little blood and it’s very light. What could this mean?

A: Yes hun this could be the cause, however is there a chance of pregnancy, if your next period is like this then go see your doctor.

Q: Anti-depressants and Anti-seizure medication….?
I’m on the anti-depressant/ Anxiety medication called fluoxetine and and anti-seizure medication called lamotrigine. I have been extremely restless since starting them both. restlessness is a side effect of both but i was wondering if there is anything i could do to tame it a bit (i am an avid tea drinker and don’t have any more caffeine than one cup of coffee a day)

A: It sounds like you’re saying that you have lots of tea, and one cup of coffee in a day. Are you drinking herbal teas? because if you are they don’t have caffeine. I’m pretty sure most regular teas have more caffeine than coffee. So if you’re drinking a lot of normal tea that might explain the restlessness.

As for medications… I’m currently taking divalproex (also known as depakote) for epilepsy. Apparently it treats depression, as well as seizure disorders. It has the opposite effect of your medication, making me constantly drowsy.

So, if you were looking for something thats NOT going to pep you up I would recommend the one I’m on

Q: Can I drive with frontal lobe epilepsy?
I have just been diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy, it has taken a long time, a lot of different head scans/tests etc. It was detected by a sleep deprivation EEG, and my dosage of lamotrigine (medication) is going up. I was just wondering, since I do not know when these little seizure things happen, would I be able to obtain a driving license and actually drive? (in the UK)

Any info & help would be appreciated, thanks.

A: I am going to say NO. petit mal seizures can deviate your path of concentration and you may lose focus of the task at hand. You might kinda space out which can lead to an accident. and as with all Epilepsy there is always the risk of having a grand mal seizure which would be very bad if you were behind the wheel. that being said, the lesion on your brain that causes the seizures may disappear with the medication in which case you will be able to drive. If you are still having petit mal at this time though it would be risky to be behind the wheel. Your best bet would be to wait a while too see how well the medication helps and how long you go without having a seizure. Good Luck!

Q: Side effects of fluoxotine and lamotrigine……?
I asked this question before… but i did not get the desired answer… here it is:

I’m on the anti-depressant/ Anxiety medication called fluoxetine and and anti-seizure medication called lamotrigine. I have been extremely restless since starting them both. restlessness is a side effect of both but i was wondering if there is anything i could do to tame it a bit (i am an avid tea drinker and don’t have any more caffeine than one cup of coffee a day)
Sugar: I’m diabetic too so my sugars are all under control.
Caffeine: I drink decaf all day.
Prozac: i have been on it before, this time a lower dose though.
lamotrigine: I started in 25mg, in about 4 days i start 50.

A: Please be careful with Lamotrigine, it is strongly associated with a rash in 10% of people. It’s like an allergic reaction with potentially devastating consequences. At first signs of this rash go to emergency room and stop the medication. I think the lamotrigine dose you are currently taking is too low to cause the restlessness.

I developed the rash when I went from 25 to 50mg, it appeared then. Rest assured I was OK in the end, but I changed to a different med. Otherwise I hear it is a good med.

As for the restlessness, with SSRI’s when you first start them they are known to cause this. I’m not sure but I think Fluoxetine is a stimulating antidepressant. Give it some more time.

Q: Lamotrigine and fluoxetine can both of these be taken?
I am taking tamoxifen after having breast cancer, i am also on lamotrigine for epilepsy, im on the menopause and having bad hot flashes the dr gave me fluoxetine, can i take these with the medication i am already on.
may i also so add i have a brain aneursysm

A: There is no interaction with Tamoxifen, but Fluoxetine and Lamotrigine should be used with caution and in some cases avoided completely. You’d need to check with your Pharmacist and/or GP. Is it ok for these two to be taken together is some instances.

Q: natural medication or remedy for anxiety depression uneven mood disorder?
hi! i have tried 3 medications.. that is my limit. i am currently in the process of tapering down to get completely off of lamictal (lamotrigine-the generic), before that was Buspar and Lexapro. nothign helped and they has bad side effects. what natural medications can i try? thanks

A: Talk to your doctor first! Even though the ‘new meds’ may be natural they can have unfavorable side effects. You may want to give the Doctor another shot; do some research on Zanax or even Valium and I say that because if you have anxiety disorder perhaps you only need something that has a longer -life and shorter therapeutic effect span… most drugs require 10-14 days in order to get the therapeutic effects in your system. Have your doctor test your serotonin levels- this will determine pathological levels of your condition. Be careful with OTC drugs and like prescriptions there is a therapeutic range for these drugs as well. But first and foremost talk to your doctor before you change your medications and start new ones! Good luck!

Q: I have a question about my JME?
I was diagnosed with JME a couple years ago, and it wasn’t until this past summer that i was put medication (lamotrigine). I’ve gone through two different EEG’s and they both showed that the medicine was working. But, i have constant twitching throughout my body. Is this normal?

Sometimes it’s a minor twitch, and sometimes it’s enough to knock something over.

A: Ask your doctor if he would object you taking a diet supplement of Magnesium Chloride. With certain medication it can have adverse side effects. If taken at 500mg, you should not have any twitching.

Do not do this if your Doctor says NO.

Q: Can Lamotrigine (Lamictal) for Bipolar Disorder cause hypomania?
So I’m Bipolar and was recently in a mixed affective episode and I hated it, so I finally asked my doctor for medication. I had taken Lamotrigine before for about 2 months, but it was kind of expensive and I didn’t notice a big difference, so I decide I didn’t need it. I’ve been taking it again for 3 weeks now, and I have switched to a hypomania episode which started about a week ago, is the medicine causing this? If it is why didn’t it do this the last time I took it? What should I do about this?

A: No, Lamictal is a mood stabilizer. It may be that you have just started again, so you don’t have the full affect, but it won’t cause a mania episode. Or maybe Lamictal isn’t the right medication for your brain chemistry. Talk to your doctor about this.

Q: taking lamotrigine 25mg for bipolar disorder,causing headaches,body aches,wake up unable to breathe..read more?
i was just put on this medication 3 weeks ago, this past week i started taking it twice daily as prescribed by my psychiatrist. are these symptoms normal?

A: There should have been a description of side effects included with the prescription, if your doctor didn’t discuss them. Anything is bothersome should be called to your doctor’s attention. They may need to change or modify the medication.

Q: Medication manufactured by Taro?
I’m taking Lamictal (Lamotrigine) manufactured by Taro, I think it’s generic brand, since on the bottle it says Lamictal (Lamotrigine) Taro, I was woundering does anyone have experiance with this generic medication, it would be a plus if it’s a Tabo manufactured, maybe it mat not be generic, i’m not sure, also is Taro company good with medication?

A: My mom works at Taro (which is now taken over by sun pharmacuticles). Yea it is a good company.

Q: Lamotrigine, epilepsy and pregnancy?
I am on Lamotrigine for epilepsy and want to find out if anyone has had a baby whilst on this medication. I know it increases risks of something going wrong just want to find out. Thanks

A: The associated risks are unconfirmed, see link to FDA (Food and Drug administation, us regulatory body) info sheet. However the baby is likely to be at greater risk if you have a seizure, and it seems that there is asociate risk with most anti seizure drugs

Birth defects come under the heading: TERATOGENICITY, and as far as I can work out this is where the main issues lie

Q: Ecstasy/medication interactions?
Will ecstasy interact with the following medications and if so, how?

Lamictal (Lamotrigine)
Buspar (Buspirone)
Klonopin (Klonzepam)

PLEASE do not respond unless you have facts and a link to back up your information.
I only want facts, nothing else.
I don’t want anyone to tell me that they think it’s bad for you in general or that I need to see a therapist.

A: Look on this website it will help you out more. It is a drug freindly Question and Answer forrum like this. I gave you the link for the Ecstasy forrum you can either do a search or ask the question yourself but most things have been asked. Good Luck

Q: Oral Contraceptives and Lamotrigine (Anti Epileptic)?
I am on both the Lamotrigine for Epilepsy and Femodette for Contraceptive reasons. I have heard that anti-epileptic medications break down the oral contraceptive faster therefore reducing its effectiveness.. does anyone know this for sure? I do not want to run the risk and need to know other options if its an issue! Thanks!

A: Background
Many antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) stimulate the metabolism of oral contraceptive steroids, thereby reducing contraceptive efficacy. A small case series suggested that a reverse interaction occurs with lamotrigine, i.e. that oral contraceptives may lower plasma lamotrigine levels markedly (1).

Aim

To assess the influence of steroid contraceptive steroids on plasma lamotrigine levels in women receiving stable lamotrigine therapy.
