Q: Why am I on Lamotrigine?
I have suffered from a multitude of mental illnesses for about 20 years now and nothing has worked except Lamotrigine. But I don’t get it. This is an anti-seizure drug right? My Dr. says that “maybe” I’m having tiny seizures in my brain that are causing all my symptoms?? “MAYBE”??? I have been on it for 4-5 years now and am petrified to go off it. I literally go crazy and feel I will either harm myself or someone else within 3 days of missing my dosages. Should I ask for some testing like CAT scans or MRI’s to see if there is something else causing my fits of rage? Am I supposed to be on this drug for the rest of my life? It works like magic but I’m still not sure why I’m on an anti-seizure drug when I don’t suffer from seizures or epilepsy of any kind. I’ve read all there is online and otherwise about this drug and it just doesn’t seem to fit. Any advice??

A: All I can say is that some drugs are used for other purposes. Flexeril is a muscle relaxer but it can be used for anxiety. Compazine is a anti- psychotic that is used for nausea. Promethazine is a antihistamine used for infections in the lungs and for nausea. The list goes on. If it works, use it!!!

Q: Can triggers still cause seizures even when I’m taking medicine?
I’m an epileptic, and I’ve been taking Lamotrigine for three years. It’s been like a miracle for me. Of course, I needed my dosage raised every year or so, because it was becoming less effective over time. Typical procedure.

Anyway, during all of that time, I’ve had no problem with my previous triggers. I could accidentally forget a dose and not realize it. I could stay on the computer for many hours on end with no effect.

I take 400 mg per day, increased just last summer. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been having problems. I’ve always had minor auras. But this morning, I had one that was so bad that I sincerely thought I was going to have a seizure.

I forgot to take my pill this morning beforehand, and had spent about an hour and a half reading online. Normally I would just have minor auras as usual, and taking my missed dose would take care of the problem. But not this time.

Anyway, I guess what I’m asking is, can a medicated person still have a seizure if triggers are involved? Or maybe my dose does need to be increased again?

Thanks…

A: taking your meds consistently is your best defense. my husband is on same medicine. he had brain surgery a few yrs ago & takes it to prevent seizures from the problem there. he still has seizures sometimes from blood sugar issues (diabetic). so yes, you can still have seizures even on the meds. you need to watch your triggers & avoid as many as possible. the medicine will help but is no cure.
