Q: Can Levetiracetam (Keppra) drugs hit you with its side effects when you go back on it?
Yeah, the question doesn’t really make sense, so i’ll elaborate.
I took Keppra for over a year, then came off it slowly because it seemed that some natural therapy was working to keep away my seizures. I stayed off the drugs for about six months but then my grand mal seizures started again and now the doctors want me to take up Keppra again.
Problem is that this time, I am experiencing bad side-effects especially the depression, tiredness, memory loss, suicidal thoughts, etc. This didn’t happen so much the first time so it doesn’t make sense that it’s happening now… or does it?

A: Special warnings about Keppra
Especially during the first few weeks of treatment, Keppra sometimes triggers psychological problems, including psychosis, hallucinations, aggression, agitation, anger, hostility, irritability, anxiety, apathy, emotional instability, depression, and attempted suicide. These problems usually pass, but be sure to alert your doctor if you feel one developing; your doctor may have to discontinue the drug or change your dosage.

At the start of treatment, Keppra also can cause extreme drowsiness, unusual weakness, and coordination difficulties. Bring such symptoms to your doctor’s attention. In a few patients, therapy must be stopped or reduced.

This drug has not been tested in children under age 16.

Q: Which Anti-cunvulsant drug is known to have the least amount of side effects between:?
Acetazolamide (Diamox®)
Carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Tegretol®)
Felbamate (Felbatol®)
Levetiracetam (Keppra®)
Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)
Primidone (Mysoline®)
Topiramate (Topamax®)
Valproic acid (Depakene®, Depakote®)
Zonisamide (Zonegran®)

A: Of Tegretol, Keppra, Trileptal, Topamax, and Depakote, Trileptal has the rep for lowest side effects. That’s an average. It made me sick the first day and I was off it in three. Depakote can be rough, cause weight gain, and mess with female hormones. Keppra can cause depression. Topamax can be magic for migraine and TLE but it can also cause real memory and word recall problems. Haven’t taken Tegretol, but it’s “big brother” to Trileptal. These are the bipolar anticonvulsants which is why I have some knowledge about them and not the others. Lots of ppl don’t get these side effects, but lots do.

Whichever med works best for your epilepsy with the least side effects will be the best med for you. Unfortunately, you’re not going to know which one it is until you try. Best bet is to start with what you neuro recommends and then take it from there.

Q: Does Keppra have serious side effects. ?
My doctor just gave me a medline plus outline for the drug Keppra (Levetiracetam). I saw that one of the side effects is forgetfullness. I was wondering if anybody knows how serious this side effect is. I would like any information. I especially would like to hear from people who use or used the drug.

A: I had a seizure when I was 6 months old and was diagnosed with Herpes Encephilitis and was hospitalized for 6 weeks. I never had a seizure after that until the age of 18, randomly in the middle of the night. With tests, they found seizure activity in the MRI and my doctor referrred me to a neurologist. She put me on 500mg of Keppra twice daily. That was 2 years ago, and I am still on that. I have not had anymore seizures. I do not believe I experience forgetfullness. The only possible negative side effect for me is weight gain. I am 19 years old and I have gained 30-40 pounds in the last few years. Good Luck!

Q: anti epileptic drugs?
can someone please answer this for me?? thank you so much in advance!

Which of the following AED’s can be administered IV?
•Phenytoin, Levetiracetam, Lorazepam, Valproic Acid and Lamotrigine.
•Phenytoin, Levetiracetam, Lorazepam, Valproic Acid and Topiramate.
•Phenytoin, Levetiracetam, Lorazepam, Valproic Acid.

A: The answer is :P henytoin, Levetiracetam, Lorazepam, Valproic Acid.
Reason: Lamotrigine and Topiramate are administered by oral route.
Phenytoin is used to treat various types of convulsions and seizures. Phenytoin acts on the brain and nervous system in the treatment of epilepsy.
Levetiracetam is used in combination with other medications to treat certain types of seizures in people with epilepsy. Levetiracetam is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Levetiracetam comes as a solution (liquid) and a tablet to take by mouth.
Lorazepam is used to relieve anxiety.
Valproic acid is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures. Valproic acid is also used to treat mania (episodes of frenzied, abnormally excited mood) in people with bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). It is also used to prevent migraine headaches, but not to relieve headaches that have already begun. Valproic acid is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by increasing the amount of a certain natural substance in the brain.
Lamotrigine is used to treat certain types of seizures in patients who have epilepsy or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and often causes developmental delays). Lamotrigine is also used to increase the time between episodes of depression, mania (frenzied or abnormally excited mood), and other abnormal moods in patients with bipolar I disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). Lamotrigine has not been shown to be effective when people experience the actual episodes of depression or mania, so other medications must be used to help people recover from these episodes. Lamotrigine is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Lamotrigine comes as a regular tablet and a chewable dispersible (can be chewed or dissolved in liquid) tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice a day. It is sometimes taken once every other day at the beginning of treatment.
Topiramate is used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures in patients with epilepsy or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is used to treat patients who continue to have seizures even when they take other anti-seizure medications. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Topiramate comes as a tablet and a sprinkle capsule to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food twice a day in the morning and evening.
