Q: Should pain medication affect a guy’s sex drive?
My BF has no sex drive due to his pain medications. Its been 3 weeks since his surgery, am I just being impatient? He is almost back to his old self minus the no sex drive and mood swings.

He is taking:

Levetiracetam 500 MG 1 tablet 2X day

Dexamethasone 1 MG (don’t know how much he takes)

Hyrocodone/APAP 5 MG/325 MG 1-2 tablets every 4 HRS as needed
(No refills on the ones listed above, so he will be off in about 1-2 weeks)

Famotidine 20 MG 1 tablet 2X day
(This one he can refill for another month after it runs out).

A: “hydrocodone” is another form of codeine… codeine is a control drug that has side effects that could decrease sex drive and cause mood alterations… it’s also a narcotic, and that is the reason there is not a refill on it… the doctor will want to see him again if the pain persists, he’s trying to keep your bf from becoming dependent on pain killers… it’s a good thing ;-)

i hope he’s better soon! merry christmas!

Q: Has anyone else experienced some weight loss/inability to gain taking KEPPRA [Levetiracetam]?
Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with partial complex seizures a few years ago. I tried Lamictal, trileptal and depakote. The doc put me on 500mg/2xday of Keppra because I plan on having children in the next couple of years. However, I’ve noticed i have dropped some weight [i'm already very naturally thin...the lowest area of BMI, and now i'm classified as 'underweight']. I have also noticed thinning in my hairline. I have had a miscarraige a couple of months ago as well. Whether the medication caused that or not, i am not sure.
I am very upset/torn because this has fixed the seizures. However, I hate looking so gaunt [i'm only 25...you can see my chest bones and ribs! 5'5 and can't go past 106lbs or so..its 110 if i eat ALOT. i've tried weight gainers and everything]. I’m tempted to go back on trileptal, because the only reason i stopped that was abdominal bloating and some moodiness. Which drug do you have experiences with? I’m at the point I’m grateful it makes me seizure-free, but I’m so depressed over how i look, and the CONSTANT comments from people. I don’t feel attractive or healthy.

A: I’ve also been taking Keppra since it first came out. My seizures were due to a head injury at work and as this disabled me I had to stop working the career I loved so much. This was in 1984. My neurologist had me taking everything that was ever thought to control these as I had no aura and both petite mal and grand mal seizures without any control. I couldn’t believe it when Keppra controlled them for the first time since they started. I’m sorry to hear about your side effects. Go to webmd.com and then look it up under Keppra. Then just click on the oral one and it’ll bring up the entire link. I just read some of it and hair loss was listed. Mine did thin out but not bad and I can only wish it had the weight loss effect on me, but it never has. My dose is exactly the same as yours only I’m 54 so my children were all born before it came out. Please research all area’s and make sure that it’s the medication. Good luck and God Bless

Q: Levetriacetam (keppra) question?
Hello
I’m currently being weaned off 250mg of Levetiracetam, could you tell me if it’s possible to go on the contraceptive implant whilst I’m on this medication?

I’m on the contraceptive pill, Microgynon so I know some contraception works but I want a more long term one now

A: Hi I am on also on the same medication as you, There is no evidence as yet that the implant would be any less effective even if you stayed on the Keppra as there are 2 kinds of Epilepsy drugs Keppra comes under the non-enzyme inducing drugs, its the enzyme inducing kind of drugs that will make most contraceptives less effective. So if you do go on other kinds of meds then double check.
I hope this helps you? My daughter has the implant & she has said its so much better than the pill etc…
Good luck

A: Hi! I have also have had partial complex seizures. I was started out with Depakote, and I went through hell! I gained 70 pounds on Depakote, and became dull. My quality of life plummeted. My doctor switched me to Lamicital, which then helped me lose the weight I gained, but did a poor job managing my seizures.

I just checked Epocrates, and weight loss is not a reported adverse reaction of Keppra, I do know while I was on Keppra I became a whole other person, very moody and hostile.

Seizure medicines are seriously the devil, I do not know your stance on this, but you may want to look into Medical Marijuana if it is legal in your state. I was always against it but it gave me my life back.

Because the Keppra is making you lose so much weight but seems to be working with you I would one, go to the doc to get your dosage changed, and two start eating like you mean it! Possibly buy Ensure+ which is made for people who need extra support maintaining weight. Although your dosage of Keppra is currently at it’s lowest recommended for partial complex seizures, combination therapy may very well save your life.

The best advice I ever got was above all to look after my quality of life over my treatment, as treatment can always be altered.

I’m sorry I rambled, I just know how frustrating it is.
