Q: Topamax Medication?
Hey :)

I went to my neurologist about 2 weeks ago about migranes, and he prescribed Topamax 25 mg.
I was wondering if anyone was taking topamax and feeling weird side effects.. like tingling in your joints, loss of appetite, heat flashes… I have also noticed that certain foods and drinks like soda, don’t taste good anymore… is this normal?
Thanks =]

A: the numbness and tingling is the most common side effect of this drug. Also your tastes will change. Carbonated beverages seem to lose a lot of flavor.. But its a normal side affect for this drug.
There are other drugs out there for migranes that do not give you such harsh side affects. If it is only migranes that is the issue, you should ask him about the different drugs Imitrex or maxalt. They are a little more expensive medications, but help a great deal. Also, if you are having more issues more on the neurological side, then it is best to follow the regimin he gives you BUT, report any side affects that you are unhappy with. Because there is always another drug to try. Some neurological medications can have permanant lasting side effects and you don’t want that.

Q: Has anyone taken the medication Topamax? How were the side effects?
I am currently about the start the medication Topamax and read the user reviews… it seems there are a TON of bad side effects. Loss of sexual desire, sever depression, hair falling out??

But are these people already semi depressed to start? Have a so-so sex life? I am 24 – pretty healthy… NO depression what so ever. In a Very healthy relationship (meaning quite active sexually) So i’m wondering if these reactions were caused by people who were already on the verge to begin with?

A: Are you Taking Topamax for migraines or epilepsy if not a psych issue?

I took Topamax for over 1 1/2 years. About 16 months of that time I took 200 mg twice daily, a VERY high dose. I was having terrible migraines and the Topamax did reduce the number.

At a dose I took (400 mg/day) there will almost certainly be side effects. Some doctors will actually refuse to prescribe a dose that high. The biggest side effect people have is tiredness, hypersomnia, and memory/concentration problems.

The reactions Topamax can cause really vary from person to person. Some have few if any problems, other can not tolerate it. It can cause a massive amount of side effects for some people. Over all, I would say that Topamax is a very black and white drug. It either is great or a disaster.

Topamax will interact with voltage gated ion channels which slows the brain down. It also has effects on GABA, a neurotransmitter, but it does not work with GABA like benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax), barbiturates, or alcohol do- so it is not addictive. But it is the slowing of the brain that causes most problems for people.

It can cause severe cognitive problems from memory loss to aphasia. But when a drug impacts the brain, especially the temporal lobe so profoundly problems tend to occur for some people.

It can cause weight loss, a unique characteristic of Topamax that similar drugs do not share. It typically does not take huge amounts of weight off but certainly some. Part of that could also be that people can become so sedated and numb they forget to eat. And when the maker of Topamax did a study to see if Topamax could be approved for weight loss they could not finish the study because the vast majority of people quit because of side effects.

Some people respond (for migraines) to a dose of 25 mg (very small). But typically 25-50 mg twice daily is the best dose. And side effects are very dose related so as the dose goes up the likelihood of side effects and the severity of them goes up. But I have scene people take 25 mg at night and sleep for 12 hrs.

I don’t completely understand your last question but I can tell you that a perfectly healthy person like you has a risk like any others do for having side effects. When I took 400 mg/day I was always tired, sleep a lot, and I never connected it to Tompamax because Topamax was very subtle for me. So even if I would always be tired I would not feel like I just took a sleeping pill.

It comes down to what you are taking it for, have you tried other alternatives, and are you willing to give it a try?

I think it is a good medication but the dose should be as low as possible and some people can not tolerate it at all. Other think it is a God send. So if you started at 25 mg and SLOWLY increased the dose and felt OK then stick with it. If you take 25 mg and sleep for a day and have memory problems then Topamax might not be for you.

Q: Will the medication topamax give you some kind of high?
Will the medication topamax give you some kind of high? and if so what are some of the side effects?

A: I’ve used this before and had to change to something else b/c of weight loss. For some people this would be a good thing, but I didn’t need to lose any weight! As for the high, I experienced none. This medication was perfect for what it was prescribed to me for – if it weren’t for the weight loss, I’d probably still be on it. Why don’t you google the name and look at the manufacturer’s website for the list of side effects.

Q: Is it bad to take the medication Topamax with soda?
I just started taking Topamax and I took it will soda. I was wondering if this is bad because it seemed to disappear in my mouth from the carbination before I even swollowed it and was wondering if it will make it not work. If anyone knows anything I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

A: use water in the future -discuss this in detail with your pharmacist & doctor.

Q: My right eye has been twitching the for the past week after taking the medication Topamax should I be fine?
It is just really bothersome and annoying.

My eye twitching started after I missed a few doses of Topamax and then restarted it and has been twitching ever sense.
I take topamax for things other than seizures.

A: talk to your doctor. I am on topamax and i dont have this

Q: Has anyone ever been on the medication Topamax?
My doctor recommended this medication and my mom and I have kinda read up on it and I just wanted to know if any of you have ever taken it and what did you think, what were the best side effects for you, what were the worst side effects for you, would you recommend it to anyone, or would you totally not recommend it to anyone? Any extra information will be GREATLY appreciated.

A: I was on this for over 2 months. Migraine everyday. It made me feel weird. However, some people swear by it. I would give it a few months. That’s what I do with stuff, unless you have severe reactions.

Q: Could the medication Topamax be enough to treat bipolar disorder by itself?
My doc gave it to me for bipolar mood swings and yes it really works.I’m only at 50 mg and I love it.

A: The aforementioned study is now considered by most psychiatrists as being accurate; evidence suggests that unless one is experiencing a major depressive episode (and thus has a dual diagnosis at this point), there is no need to add an antidepressant to the medication regime. In fact, an individual with bipolar disorder who is on the verge of a manic episode can be “bumped-up” into full-blown mania if an antidepressant is taken.
As for Topamax being “enough” to treat bipolar disorder, in addition to it being traditionally used as an anti-seizure med it also has mood-stabilizing properties, as do many of the anticonvulsants (benzodiazepines excluded, as they work based on a different mechanism). The reason for this (and here’s where I turn into a really big nerd) is that we are finally beginning to realize that the neurotransmitters have more than one function. For example, one neurotransmitter may play a role in mood, pain sensation, as well as proper electrical activity of the brain and muscles, so it follows that a medication that may be used to slow the electical impulses of the brain (and thus the signals to the rest of the body) as in the case of anti-epileptics may have the secondary effect of controlling mood, or at least making it more stable. (Another good example of this is the use of Neurontin or Lyrica to treat nerve pain associated with chonic pain or acute pain post-operatively.)
I myself have been stable for years on old-school lithium carbonate (and recently Lyrica), and it has always been “enough”, provided my blood serum levels are monitored appropriately. Topamax may be all that you require provided you don’t skip the blood tests (I know I’ve done this because of inconvenience, but I don’t recommend it), and if it’s working, stick with it!

Q: Can I drink while on the medication Topamax?
I just started taking the pain killer Topamx 2 days ago. I’m going to a bar next weekend. Can I drink while on this medication?

A: While you’re getting used to it I wouldn’t. It took me about 2 weeks to get used to my dosage.
I’ve been on 100 mg daily for about 2 years — light social drinker — no effect.

Topamax has been a LIFE SAVER for me!! I was having almost daily migraines but am so much better now; hope it works as well for you.

Take care!! :)

Q: How long does it take for the medication Topamax to get out of your system after you stop taking it?

A: 21 hours

Q: Where in CA can I find the cheapest medication called Topamax?
Cvs,Walgreens,walmart,rite aid ?

It’s costly I hear. Has the generic came out for the USA?

A: Yes it’s called Topiramate. It runs about $50 for the higher doses for a 60-count prescription. That is still high, I suppose, but not compared with the brand name which is almost $500 for 60-200mg pills. There may be a patient assistance program you can qualify for if you have a diagnosis that supports why you are on it (a lot of people use the medication for weight control instead of the official indications). This also depends on whether you have insurance (the program requires that you have none) and if you do qualify, you can get the medication for free for up to a year at a time. I will include the link to that program as well if it comes in handy….

Q: I was wondering what effect does the medication Topamax have on the birth control pill ortho tri cyclen lo?
does it make the birth control any less effective? and if so, does it by alot? any help is appreciated : )

A: I am on Topomax and Neurontin which are both antiseixure medications.

I was told by a PCOS specialist as well as my neurologist that being on antiseizure medication negates the action of any birth control medication.

I don’t take birth control medicatiomn but it’s often a treatment used for PCOS however I was told that as long as I need the Topomax and Neurontin more, it was of no use to take birth control because it basicaly blocks its effects.

I do not know to what extent but both doctors have told me that it just blocks it so it seems that it’s completely useless to take birth control when you are on Topomax and other antiseizure type meds.

I dont know why you are on Topomax but if you need birth control, it might be worth considering another drug or if you are like me and willing to give up birth control for the antiseizure drugs than thats your decision to make.

I take the antiseizure medication topomax to prevent migraines and neurontin to help prevent my chronic neuropathic pain. I’m not sexually active so I really dont care about birth control. I could use the PCOS treatment but my chronic pain is a larger issue for me thus I choose the meds over birth control.

Anyways, my understanding is that ortho tri cyclen or any birth control will not have any effect once you are on drugs like topomax.

Also with topomax, make sure you drink a lot of water because it can bring about a kidney stone. It’s not common but it’s something to beware of so keep the water going.

Q: Has anyone had any experience with the medication topamax please?
Did it have any noticeable side effects? I am really after personal experiences please as I have looked at web sites already…thanks :-)

A: my best friend was on topomax for a while. she was really sleepy and not hungry she ended up losing about 50 lbs. once they got the dosages correct she was fine most of the side affects went away even though she still has a small appetite.

Q: As anyone lost an extreme amount of weight while taking the medication Topamax for migraines?

Q: While taking the medication Topamax does Soda taste funny?

A: Soda tastes funny to me too… It is listed as a side effect

Q: Topamax Topiramate medication allergies?
I have been prescribed Topamax medication I have started with 25mg and from day one starting it I began getting allergies. Feels like seasonal allergies… baggy eyes non stop sneezing and congestion. I took it for 10 days and was supposed to increase to 50mg but my allergies just wouldn`t clear up. I got off it and my allergies went away. I spoke with my doctor and she said despite the allergies I should continue on taking it. I just can`t live like that with constant allergies it just feels icky. Will I eventually become immune to the topamax and the allergies dissapear

I tried starting back the topamax but immediately the allergies came back. I read that Topamax is linked to causing Vitamin D deficiency. Could this be what`s causing me to get these allergies.
When taking topamax I tried taking vitamin d supplements but the allergies didn`t clear up. any advice would be greatful thanks as I don`t believe my doctor has all the answers I`m looking for.

A: The best you can do is simply tell your doctor you won’t take it anymore. They can’t force you to take anything and if you refuse will be forced to give you something else. There are plenty of other anti-seizure meds out there. You shouldn’t be forced to live with a constant allergy attack because your doctor doesn’t want to try a different medication.
