Q: Is it safe to drink the medicine topamax with oxycodone?
I am just want to know if there are any dangerous effects of mixing these two medicines together.

A: What do you mean drinking Topamax (topiramate)? I may be wrong but I don’t think Topamax comes is a liquid form (at least not based on American or Canadian databases).

However it is safe to take Topamax and oxycodone although risk of sedation is increased since both often cause tiredness.

Q: Experiencing weight loss with the medicine Topamax?
I just started it for reasons other than weight loss but heard that is a major side effect. Has anyone lost a lot of weight on it? how much and how fast? I’m a bit nervous about it.

A: I have kinda lost track of what I have lost and when, but according to my chart I weighed 255 pounds in November. I am 6 foot 1 inch male so that is well into the obese range, and when I was weighed at the doctor last week I weighed 195 pounds. That is 60 pounds and I didn’t purposely make any effort whatsoever to lose weight or change my eating habits. I simply do not have any time–day or night–when I feel hungry and the majority of my calories comes from pepsi and oreo cookies and not even enough of that because I weigh less and less every time I get on the scale. It was sorta slow because my doctor started the dosage very small and built it up to prevent side effects,so I didn’t fully stop eating until my dose got up to a substantial level. If this doesn’t stop I am going to have to start drinking ensure because I am going to die if I try to live off soda and cookies for much longer.

Q: Has anyone ever tooken the medicine Topamax?
If you have can you please tell me what kind of side effects you had i have not pick up my medicain eyet but before i do i like to know a little about it and what you feel like?

A: I have to say that I appreciate this drug very much because it has been effective where others failed, that said, it is a very harsh drug to get onto for some people. I will warn you that the doctor may tell you to get on it 25 mg each week or higher, but we all respond differently. For me, that dosage is too high and when I started at that it was hell. I could not move from my bed, I had a constant buzzing sound in my head, I was aggressive, I would not eat, and if I did I became dizzy, cold to touch, and would pass out. I discovered that if I go up 25 mg every two weeks these symptoms don’t occur. So, if you start to feel extremely lethargic or an altered mood, talk to your doctor about extending your titration period.

As for the everyday, talking to others the common experience is the pins and needles sensations in your hands and feet. The first months it is constant but then it goes away. Tinnitus is common because Topamax is ototoxic. Also, I experienced this as well as a friend of mine, is the feeling of nausea if you don’t eat every few hours. Topamax does negatively affect me in that it doesn’t allow me to exercise anymore without heat exhaustion setting in very quickly, but that seems to be uncommon.

Overall, do I like having to take it? No. But I have to. It makes living my life with less siezures possible. It’s not much of an option. All drugs have side effects. Now, if you are taking it for one of the off-label uses, like weight loss, I would seriously tell you to reconsider. But if your taking it because you need it, like all thing you weight the benefits against the bad. For me, being able to work and remain safe are more important than the discomforts, like the buzzing in my ears sometimes.

Q: can any one tell me anything the about the medicine topamax?
I have heard that it will treat migraines / leg pain and help you lose weight. What is true?

A: It is used to treat migraines and also seizures. Some studies suggest that about 20% of people who need to take it have to stop because of the bad side effects. It is not a weight loss medication. Side effects can include weight loss, anorexia, lethargy, somnolence (falling asleep), paresthesia (pins and needles), dizziness, and memory problems.

This site gives a great deal of information about this medication if you check all the links. I hope this helps.

Q: Ok the newest drug in my medicine cabinet is Topamax. Anyone have any opinions on it?
I take it for PTSD and to help me sleep. Did you have any bad side effects?

A: I took it for migraines. I couldn’t tolerate the way it made my hands and feet always feel asleep. I ended up changing to Neurontin.

Q: I get bad migraines and I was just put on a medicine called Topamax?

can anybody tell me if they have been on this and how did or does it work for you, I hope it works because I have been on like 4 different ones that don’t work and she said this one should work, but Im scared of the side affect… I know the side affects say possible, don’t mean it will happen… thanks

A: I’m on Topamax for migraines and absolutely love it! It has some weird side effects-the tingles in your face and hands, a little dizziness. These went away within 3 weeks though. It reduced my migraines from 3-4 a week to 2-3 a month. It also suppresses your appetite. It won’t actually get rid of a migraine though. All of the other medications that I’ve tried to get rid of migraines give me really bad side effects, so I have to suck it up and take 4 advil and hope it goes away. Once you’re on it for a month or so, you will see a huge difference in the frequency and severity of your migraines.

Good Luck!!

Q: im taking topamax medicine for one month i wont to stop i have to much side effect what is the steps?

A: Yes I agree, Topamax stinks. Too dangerous of a drug to go off of on your own though, call your doctor. He will give you advise on best way to get off of them. Good that you have only been on the drug for one month.

Q: If you’ve been put on the medicine Topamax for migraines/seizures and lost weight…?
how much weight did you lose and how quickly? I just started taking 25 mg a night this week, and then next week i am supposed to take 50 mg, then the week after that 75 mg, then the 4th week, 100 mg a day. i heard about the weight loss and was wondering how soon the effects started. i don’t want to lose too much weight.

A: The weight loss effects of Topamax (topiramate) usually occur at dosages above 100mg per day. If you do experience weight loss it occurs very slowly, usually no more than 1/4-1/2 lb per week.

Q: How long before you know you’re allergic to a medicine?
I just started a new medicine tonight, topamax for migraines. I took it 2 hours ago, and I’m worried I might have an allergy to it because my throat feels a little swollen… I can still breathe obviously, but it’s bothersome.. Feels like a panic attack almost. So my question is, how long would it take to have a full blown reaction to a medicine? I’m afraid to go to sleep..

A: you should stop the medication until you hear from your dr. if your symptoms get worse or you have shortness of breath then you need to be seen right away

Q: Has anyone tried topamax with heartburn medicine?(Zantac)?
I just started on Topamax and am hesitant to take Zantac for my heartburn…Congo

A: Hubby tried it and didn’t like it. Now he takes Aciphex and it works great. It doesn’t have a whole list of side affects, either. Better yet, you can print a coupon off their site that is good for up to $30 rebate when you pick it up at the pharmacy.

Q: medicine question — topamax?
started topamax up and i am taking 100 mg a day. I was told that once you stop and re-start you might not lose weight on it again. I am wondering why this is?

How come you will have every single other known side effect again and again and again but not the one single beneficial side effect?

I just started it saturday, for migraines. I started it back in April 09, and lost weight on it and it was GREAT. All headaches stopped, my mood evened out, this was a miracle drug for me! This was the generic brand, topapiramate. Almost immediately, my appetite was gone. I had one night of a weird experience where I didnt know where I was but then I was FINE. :)

Had to stop it due to losing my insurance/ lay off.

Finally got coverage back when I got a job again. Got back on topamax. But this time, i only get the brand name for some reason. Not generic.

Since I’ve been on it starting Saturday, it has been a hellish experience. Headaches, nausea, one minute I have an appetite and am very hungry the next I am disgusted at the thought of food almost like a binge type thing, feeling of crawling in my skin, RACING thoughts and I mean racing to the point its terrifying. I woke up at 1am the other night and I had random racing thoughts to the point the only way I could make it stop was to get up, go into another room, turn the light on and start counting to clear my head.
The list goes on…
trouble concentrating..
driving I feel like I am playing a video game my depth perception is off… I can describe it kind of as a feeling of being buzzed sometimes…odd…
random bouts of nausea….
random bouts of tiredness then energy…
generally feeling like I belong in a mental institution, like I feel like I could just say random things to people without caring…. loss of some inhibition. Not to an extreme, such as I wouldnt run around naked or anything… but I feel less likely to hold back on some things like verbally speaking out.

HELP!

A: Just one question. After all this time off the Topamax, did you restart it at the same dose you ended with?

Topamax (topiramate) needs to be started at a low dose and then slowly titrated up to the effective dose. It has nothing to do with brand or generic.

Q: Im on Topamax, Abilify and Buspar, I weight 145 and Im 5′7, with the medicine, can i get down to 135 easily?
Im on 50 mg of Topamax, (twice a day, I know this medicine causes weight loss) Im also on 10 mg of Abilify and 10 mg of buspirone (buspar)
(keep in mind that Im not one of these people who use medicine just for things like weight loss, I have terrible migraines so thats why Im on it, I was just curious of the weight loss side effect, if it bothers my health in anyway believe me its going to be stopped!)

A: It does cause weight lose but I’m assumning you just got on it. Your on a very low dose, but I will warn you it has some very harsh side effects. For the sake of ten pounds I am not sure why you were even put on it. As someone who has to take it I can’t imagine why you would go through with that rollercoaster when your so close to losing it naturally.

Q: Is is ok to take Requip with Topamax?
I’m taking topamax which is an anti-seizure medicine in the morning and at bedtime and I would like to take my requip as prescribed at bedtime with it but I’m fearfull of the side effects. I was wondering if anyone is taking the same combination of meds? If so can you give me some feedback on it. Thank you for your in put.

A: Web md has a wealth of medical info. Go there! Or better yet, Ask your Dr.

Q: Has anyone lost weight with Topamax after being on it for over 2 years?
I’ve been on the medication at different doses for over 2 years. I originally lost probably 15-20 lbs taking up to 150 mg of Topamax, (I am taking it for migraines) but in the last year or so, noticed not losing any weight anymore. My migraines are also reoccuring. I did drop my dosage recently down to 75 mg because I didn’t notice much of a difference at first in my migraines. If I go back up to 150mg or get off of the medicine and go back on it, does anyone know if I will lose more weight again or have benefits for my migraines again? In the beginning my migraines significantly improved.

A: Hi,
I practice headache medicine and probably prescribe this at least 5 times a day.

About 60% of people lose weight on this drug but it is based on how fat you were to begin with and what dose. If your headaches started coming back I would advise going back up to 150 mg per day but do it slowly over three weeks.

First 100 then 125 the up to 150 per day. This avoids side effects.

Check with your doctor again if the headaches are coming back, they may want to get an MRI of the brain if you haven’t had one yet.

I have a website with more info and not I am not selling any thing..just for information only.k I discuss the drug more there.

Good luck!
