Q: what are the risk of taking the migraine medication Topamax ?
I am 17 years old and when i went to my headache specialist they suggested i take Topamax and there was no real threats. But reading online about all the side effects has me worried.

A: Side effects from prescription medication are very common and that is one of the main reasons why more and more people are turning to alternative medicine which in general is free from side effects.

Coenzyme Q10 is supposed to help for migraines.

Q: Can someone tell me what Topamax is used for?
I just found a bottle of Topamax in my GF’s drawer (200mgs). I tried to look it up online but it only said it was for epilepsy, and I’m pretty sure she doesn’t have epilepsy. Is it used for anything else?

A: Hey hey… I’ve been taking Topamax for about a year now (350mgs/day). Yes it is used for epilepsy, migranes and one of the major side effects is that it may reduce your hunger… BUT, I’m bipolar and this drug was prescribed to me as a “mood stabilizer”… A very affective one at that. I take it along with Lithium (another mood stabilizer) and Prozac (anti-depressant).

Hope this helps.

And stop snooping… Your girl may not want you to know all her issues just yet. :)

Q: I just started taking topamax and so I looked up the side effects of it online and a couple sites said I?
should get an ID bracelet or some form of ID showing I am on a sezier medicien. Is it really that important that I need to go as far as that or what? Also how long does the tingling in feet last and I also noticed the center of my tongue is slight numb. When I drink my soda pop it feels like it is flat but only on the center part of my tongue. Does anyone else have this also? Thanks :)
I take it for migraines.

A: I never had any of that when I took the topamax. I take it for migraines. All I can say is THANK GOD!! It helps so much. I have been on it for a very long time now. As far as the ID bracelet never even crossed my mind. I carry a card with me at all times. It has a list of all current meds I take. I have lupus so I have made it a habit.

Q: Pharmacist question?? Just started on Topamax for migraine therapy.?
I was started on Topamax yesterday for migraine therapy. I also take Yazmin for birth control and I saw online for Topamax that it could interfere. How can I know for certain if it affects Yazmin? I definately dont want more children! My baby is 8 y/o so if its going to interfere with the birth control then I need to figure something else out. Please help!

A: Why don’t you call your own pharmacist where you get your prescriptions filled and ask that question. Better than getting info here and it should be very easy.

Q: does topamax for headaches cause ortho evero birth contol patch to not work?
I was put on topamax for really bad migranes about 2 months ago. (100 mg) I have been on the patch for about 7 months now. well the doctor that put me on topamax new I was on the patch but did not say anything about it affecting my birth control. When I got home I was reading online about topamax and some people had sad that it could cause the patch to be less effective. So at my next doctors apt I asked the doctor If the topamax would affect my birth contol and she said NO but she told me i should take prenatal vitamans just in case. That was a month ago. Well just yesterday I got a new box of patches and I was reading The info packet and it says plainly that topamx can make ortho evero not as effective? Whats the deal with this and whats my chance of getting pregnant?

A: It starts reacting with birth control if you are taking more than 200 mg a day.

A: Remember that package inserts need to list even the most remote risks and potential interactions associated with the product.

Nobody can tell you the exact odds of getting pregnant, but if you aren’t comfortable with the risk, I’d probably use condoms, or talk with your gyn about other birth control options. (The pill/patch/ring is probably not the safest option for women with severe migraines anyway — would an IUD be an option for you?)

Q: Topamax for weight Loss?
I’m originally on topamax for seizures but I also heard that it can help you lose weight also… I looked online and different people had different experiences with it. It doesn’t decrease my appetite it increases it… Can it still help me lose weight?

A: The most frequently reported dose-related adverse reactions at doses of 200—1000 mg/day were fatigue, nervousness, impaired cognition, confusion, anorexia, language problems, anxiety, emotional lability, weight loss, and tremor. Having said this not everyone experiences each of these adverse reactions. As for your case, the “weight loss” side effect doesn’t apply to you since you are asking the question and probably haven’t notice a change from your baseline weight. The best and most healtiest way to lose weight is to get plently of exercise and eat right, burn more calories than you intake. Of course this is a boring regime and a huge reason why people don’t do it. =/ If you’re looking for an alternative anticonvulsant med in terms of treating your condition while experiencing the “weight loss” side effect, consult with your doctor/pharmacist for many anticonvulsant meds out there have the side effect of “weight gain” >_< and also the other alternative anticonvulsants might not control or treat your seizures as well as topiramate. As a general rule of thumb, we tend to stick to the first med that works unless side effects are too much to tolerate, then we switch meds. Also an important information we need in order to evaluate is how long have you been on the med? If its only been 2 weeks and you expect to see a loss of weight...keep wishing. So time is an issue.

Q: Does Cigna health insurance cover Topamax for bipolar?
I’ve searched online and cant find out if they do or not. It’s late to call but I have my script waiting for me at Walgreen’s and It has a hold on it to have my psych contact the insurance I guess. How much is this drug? If I cant get it Im going to try lamictal, I am currently on 900 of lithium which did me so much better than seroquel that I tried.I’m happy :) but my mind races at night a little still with intrusive thoughts…

A: health-quotes.isgreat.org – I switched to this health insurance from them, cause it gives much cheaper rates for mе.

Q: Trying to lose weight, Calories per day ?
Ok, I need to lose over 100lbs. I was recently diagnosed with a severe thyroid condition and I am now on medication for that. I also take a medication called topamax that left me without an appetite. I thought this would be a good thing but it has turned out to be the opposite.

I did an online calculator that said I should be eating close t

Q: Tramadol in a capsule… to go up the nose or not…?
My husband had shoulder surgery last year and still has bad pain from it. He recently got a very good, new job and does some lifting. He does not have insurance (he will have great insurance in 90 days) and we could not afford a doctor’s visit so he ordered Tramadol online via my canadian pharamacy I used to order Topamax (anti seizure drug) from. Anyway, they sent him “Tramadil” from India. They are legit, he took two by mouth and he’s still alive and he said they felt the same way Tramadol did.

A buddy with a herniated disc came over and went wild over these things, wanting to SNORT them as one would an Oxycontin or Percocet. Since they were in Capsule form with already crushed powder, he couldn’t see why not. My hubby gave him two to take home.

We are wondering if it’s alright to snort Tramadol. I personally would not.

Only SERIOUS, educated, tactful answers will be tolerated.

Thanks in advance :)

“Question Authority Think for Yourselves”

A: HELL NO! Do not do it. It is two drugs in one. If it were just the narcotic(Like a OC) fine but that crap in there that inhibits serotonin will create serious problems. Like snorting a damn Prozac. It does serious things that are all bad. BIGTIME! Like Rapid B/P change and it cannot be done. You honestly can kill yourself doing this. No lie. Opiate tolerence has nothing to do with it. If you can snort 5 80’s a day, Ultram can still kill you.

Ultram is a weak opiate that randomly hits receptors, it does not no where to go to begin with, crush it and inhale it, (In your case it is already powder Don’t let this encourage anyone) it will really be confused. Ultrams are not smart to begin with.

I am not gonna get into on here. Read in between the lines. And thank god you had the sense to ask. And the woman is always right, good call!

Ultrams are horrible enough of a drug.

Q: Migraine prevention medication question?!?
Hey guys. I have had migraines for 10 yrs. I have tried preventative— topamax, depokate and inderal. My doctor put me on 20 mg of inderal, and it didn’t do ANYTHING. My mom went on blood pressure medications and her headaches have virtually disappeared… I have changed doctors since..and have read online about it–most people take between 160-240 mg of inderal per day (at least 80 mg) for migraine prevention.

My NEW doctor had offered to put me on it but I said no (not realizing the difference in mg’s was THAT big)…

I have also read that Elavil is good for migraines and sleep (and depression). I have trouble sleeping and of course, have ridiculous migraines. Plus, I have suffered from depression (but I they have diagnosed me with having bipolar, if i take a SSRI -bipolar IV – i believe).

I am wondering what peoples exp’s are w/migraine prevention–specifically inderal and elavil. Trying to decide what to try first, if anything at all…
Oh by the way–background info on my medications:

I am not taking any medication for depression. they tried to put me on mood stabilizers but they made my brain foggy and I couldnt handle it. I don’t feel 100% now but I feel better than being on depakote, seruqel, and lamictal (the meds they tried me on). I am only on Imitrex 100 mg, and phenegran 25 mg–as needed. Also, I take fiorcet w/aspirin for non-migraine headaches.
Plus, topamax and depokate did NOT stop my migraines!

A: Hubby has tried nortriptyline which worked well at first but after a while even with the dosage increased it didn’t work. He is now using Verapamil ER 120mg daily and this works well for him. Let your doctor work with you to find out what works best for you. You only mentioned a couple of drugs being tried for migraine preventions so you have tons more you can try if you want to.

Q: Question for a Pharmacist?
I have migraine headaches. I was taking Amitriptyline 10mg until a week ago when I was given Topamax by my doctor. My doctor said to wait at least a week to start taking the Topamax, but to consult with my Pharmacist on how long to wait, also. When I went to the pharmacy, I forgot to ask, and I haven’t found a ton of info online… So, is a week a sufficient amount of time to wait to start taking the Topamax? I stopped taking the Amitriptyline a week ago. I was on it for 6 months.

Thank you!
My pharmacy is closed right now. I can call tomorrow for sure, but I thought I’d post something here first. ;)

A: It should be okay, but wait up to 72 more hours or 3 more days (because I am not a Pharmacist). Take 2 Ibuprofen 2 or 3 times daily while waiting, or 12 total pills. This will allow the remaining drug content in your tissues/cells to subside or go away, before you take a new med with contraindications and concurrent negative effects.

Q: I have these headaches, I faint, and I can’t remember things from not even ten minutes ago.?
Last October I got my first retail job, great idea that was. I ended up feeling woozy on the work-floor, and nearly blacking out behind the counter. At the time I thought it was because I was in Dual Enrollment, High School, and working two jobs at the time, but that didn’t seem to stop the problems once I quit the job and finished school.

I started seeing neurologists about it, and in January it happened again, right out of the blue while I was working at my computer I passed out. I went to the hospital and they put me on an IV of Ritalin.

That wasn’t the end of it either, around mid-august I was rushed to the cardiologist because I might have had two miniature heart attacks or strokes during class. All the while during this, I was put onto Topamax for these migranes that I just get out of the blue.

Now just last week I started to notice while I was working on my online schoolwork that I can’t remember things. Things that I just read, or even things that I know, I can’t remember them like I used to be able to. I’m only seventeen so memory shouldn’t be a problem. Long term memory is fine, it’s just things that have happened within the month or week that I can’t recall.

I’m not looking for a diagnosis, I’m asking if this has happened to anyone else, and if they have any clues as to what it could be. So far my Neurologists, Cardiologists, and Psychologists have come up blank.
I have been eating properly. I watch my calories, and I make sure that I’m getting all of my major vitamins daily.
I’m not taking vitamins daily either. I get what I need through food.

A: are you eating properly? sometimes poor nutrition can cause these types of problems. please keep working with your doctors and maybe see a nutritionist. proper nutrition won,t hurt a bit, and it might help.

Q: Strange worrisome headache, someone tell me what it was?
was walking around in a store today and suddenly got this awful headache on one side of my head ( I get migraines but this was different) it made me dizzy and lightheaded, I couldn’t think straight, and I kept squinting my eyes due to the pain. For about 30 minutes it hurt soooo bad. Then suddenly out of nowhere I got this really cold sensation (almost like a big raindrop) at that spot of my head, it lasted a couple minutes, then it tingled, and then the sensation and the headache were gone. I can find no information online about something like this, and I am very concerned about the last part (the cold sensation and the headache vanishing) does anyone know what happened?
I am 24, I take topamax for bipolar and my migraines both, 300 mg a day (150 in the morning and 150 at night)
I have suffered from headaches and migraines since I was a child, but never felt anything like this before.
I also take iron because I am actually low in iron and just had my iron tested recently by my doctor and it was normal so that is not it either, although thank you for trying to help.

A: Iron deficency test: Go to the mirror and pull your lower eyelid and see if the color is red or flesh color. If its flesh colored you are lacking enough iron and should take a herbal iron like Floradix. It will take a month to see a difference. Iron carrys oxygen in your blood and if you dont have it you will feel tired, cold hands and feet, headaches, RLS, dull brittle hair, brittle nails, poor sleep, pale skin (see thru), shortness of breath, fatigue, poor concentration, low mood, ringing in the ears, irregular heart beats, cracks in the corner of the mouth, dizziness, fainting, sore tongue and canker sores. Add b12 and folic acid for best results.

I did an online calculator that said I should be eating close to 2200 calories per day with moderate to light excersise to lose weight. I thought this was a bit high but I did several calorie calculator’s and got the same thing. This is the problem….I can’t eat that much. I keep a close count on my calories and can only manage to take in between 1100 to 1500 a day. When I do manage the 1500 I feel so full and uncomfortable it is awful. How in the world do I manage the 2200?

I lost 10 lbs when I first went on thyroid meds but that was awhile ago…in the last 4 weeks I have lost nothing, not even a pound. I am pretty sure my body thinks it is starving but I am just not hungery. What should I do?
Ok…I do walk every day apx a mile which is the most I can do because of severe arthritis in my spine, but a mile is much more than I could do a few months ago. Also i do eat 5 times a day. Small meals spaced out…but the total calories never exceeds 1500 and is usually closer to 1200
and I would like to also add that most people eat the small meals 5 times a day to keep from feeling hungry, I do it to make sure I eat…. I never get hungry, not at all. I could go all day without eating a bite if I didn’t eat on my scheduled times and would never miss it.

A: To date I have lost 50 lbs. I will be at my ideal weight in 20lbs.

I also have arthritis and find running and walking painful at times.

I question your calorie counting. 4 pieces of pizza a day are 1200 calories. Three PBJ sandwiches are 1200 calories. My point is over a day that is not much food. You should be loosing weight if you are counting correctly.

My recommendation is to do things you enjoy and ultimately reduse azz time. Find other activities to do other than PC and TV.

For exercise I do run now that Ive lost some weight but I make most gains with the elliptical and the gym and my road cycle. I can ride my bike for hours and burn upwards of 6000 calories in a day.

Get a gym membership and use the pool and the equipment. Watch the diet (if you have an Iphone download the Tap n Track App) also learn to exercise and enjoy it.

Next set goals. First goal is up to you but a 5k run/walk. Find an event start training for it and do it.

Best advice I ever recieved related to weight lose and training – consistantcy always beats intensity.
