Q: Does topiramate make carbonated drinks taste funny?
I was put on topiramate( a seizure medicine ) for migraine 10 days ago. I don’t drink many carbonated drinks, but both times i did during these ten days, the drinks have tasted weird. Is this a side affect of the drug? I’m 13.
A: Yes it is probably a side effect of the medication. A lot of medications used for seizure disorders give carbonated drinks a metalic taste. It will continue as long as you use the medication (I never got used to the taste). Crystal Light is a good substitute for carbonated drinks if that helps you out any!
Q: Question about the prescription drugs’ Baclofen, Dilauded, Zofran and Topiramate?
A little over 7 months ago my doctor prescribed me with a couple different drugs to help with an on-going medical issue I have had for the last 2 years. (ilioinguinal nerve damage)
4mg Dilaudid, for the pain. Lyrica, for body spasms I have due to the nerve damage. Baclofen to relax my muscles and help prevent spasming. & finally 4mg Zofran to prevent nausea from the Dilauded. I was just recently taken off the Lyrica a little over 2 months ago, however, due to a reaction towards the medicine, and am now taking 50mg Topiramate in it’s place.
In the morning I take Dilauded, Baclofen and Zofran. Then when night falls I repete the 3 again, accompanied by the Topiramate. On days where the pain isn’t bad I will only take the pills at night.
I am aware of the side effects that come with these pills, for I have been taking them for quite some time now. My condition shows no signs of improving any time soon, though, so my doctor has no intentions of taking me off of them.
I understand that my doctor wouldn’t keep me on them for this long if it was going to be a problem, but I am just curious as to wether or not some of these drugs (other than the obvious Dilauded) may develope problems, from taking them over a long period of time.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
P.S.
I am well aware that Dilauded is a narcotic and if not taken properly can be very addicting. Before anyone feels the need to lecture me, please know that I hate taking them and therefore use them responsibly, and only when I need them. Thanks.
Also the Dilauded and Zofran are taken orally in pill form.
A: of course they can. have you researched your medications? read up on them and educate yourself. google long term side effects from dilaudid. also- read up on your medications in a Physicians Desk Reference. you may find a lot of info on one of the PDR websites as well. I always advise my patients that they should learn about their medications and educate themselves. just because a doctor prescribes it doesn’t mean it won’t cause any damage
Q: Does topiramate cause infertility?
Does anybody using it experience it infertility with this medicine?
A: I honestly feel that was one of the few medicines that caused problems with my unborn child. i had severe migraines and once i stop nursing my son the doc placed me on that and a few others.. few months later i found out i was pregnant which they did an ultra sound9 and other blood work) only to find out the baby was sick… and i did not carry the child to term.. after that happen it almost destroyed me and i allowed the doctor who knew nothing about me or what happen with the unborn baby talk me into having a tubial.. needless to say i had it reversed last year and were ttc .. talk to your doc if your trying to get pregnant, depending on the dose you may be ok..this is what i feel about that medication.. but again i was taking 3 others as well.. that is why my doctor did the testing because of the risk involved with pregnancy and or nursing.
talk to your doctor!!
Q: weightloss and generic topamax (topiramate)?
i’m bipolar and ocd. i just took my 1st dose (50 mg) of topiramate like an hour ago. i was supposed to take it before bed but i wanted to see what the side effects were like…kinda feels like i’m stoned.
i was wondering about the weight loss? i have polycystic ovarian syndrome and was also taking a bunch of medicine that made me gain a lot weight. so now instead of being 5′4″ 130 lbs i’m 180 lbs.
even though i work out regularly and eat pretty well i still am fat and feel miserable and can’t stop obssessing over my weight. i’m hoping that the topiramate will take some of the edge off and help me lose weight.
anyone have success with weight loss taking 50 mg of generic topamax? i really want to lose 50 lbs
A: Weight loss with Topamax (topiramate) is a very gradual process. 1/2 to 3/4 pound a week. It does work. I was on it for a different reason and did lose 50lbs. It took almost 2 years though.
Q: Question about medicine making me dizzy?
Ok so on friday I started taking 2 topiramate daily instead of one. I am really dizzy today and unaware/ confused and having a hard time comprehending things. I am tired and my head is heavy. I was not sure it was the medicine that was making me dizzy because I got nearly alcohol poisoning on friday night I thought this was a hangover the other two days but it isn’t it is definitely the medicine. I called the doctor about me being dizzy and he is getting back to me. I am unable to do anything right now can anyone tell me what to do? I am really messed up I can’t even read right without trying. I am close to rapid eye movement and everything is kind of blurry and faded when i move in and out. PS: The medicine can’t hurt you if you combine alcohol with it because I checked but I am just not sure what to do right now.
A: wrong. medicine CAN hurt you if you take it with alcohol–most meds are matabolized by the liver, which is now busy dealing with the alcohol you put in there.
This and your side effects need to be brought to the attention of your care provider (who wrote you the prescription)
Dizziness is a sign that your brain isn’t getting the circulation it needs, such as when you have a drop in blood pressure…give the Dr’s office a call and tell them what’s going on.
Q: Topiramate for migraine?
Hello everyone,
i have been having migraine for the past two years and i have tried different types of medicine but they all didn´t work, the neurologist told me to start taking topamax and i have being on it 4 the past 2 days.
so many people have told me it has bad side effects and that i should stop taking it, but i don´t know what to do besides i think am too young to take that kind of drugs (am 17).
what should i do?
is it true it´s produces memory problems?
A: All drugs have side effects. What you have to look at is the benefit verses the risk. Having said that, let me tell you that I have had severe migraines for many years and have been on Topamax for all of those years. I also take 2 other drugs for the migraines, one daily Inderal, and Imitrex when the headaches hit.
It is true that Topamax does have a side effect of memory and concentration problems which are listed on the manufacturers site. You may or may not have this side effect. If you do notice this problem, discuss it with your doctor and let them know that it concerns you. There are other drugs, but you have to ask what their side effects are too and decide what to do from that point. Migraines are terrible to deal with as I know I don’t have to tell you. Give the med a chance and see what happens first then work from there. Good luck and I hope you do well.
Q: Is it bad to take two mood stabilizers at once? One being Topiramate and the other Abilify? (bipolar)?
I’ve had some side effects from the Topiramate already. It has made me lose weight, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, etc it didnt really help with my mood swings at all. The only reason Im continuing to take this is because it is helping me to lose weight. I am now taking three medicines at the same time: Wellbutrin (antidepressant) Topiramate, and Abilify. Is there a doctor who knows of a mood stabilizer other than Topiramate which helps you lose weight?
A: I have taken Wellbutrin, Abilify, Zyprexa and loads of other psych drugs for major depression (not bipolar disorder). Wellbutrin is known to help people lose weight. It certainly did for me. Some mood stabilizers might be weight neutral, but I have never heard of any that lead to weight loss.
Shortness of breath and especially coughing up blood sound like awful side effects, and the Topiramate is not even helping with your mood swings.
Many doctors don’t prescribe antidepressants (like Wellbutrin) for bipolar patients because it can push them into mania, but there are no absolute rules and it depends on the dosage.
I wish I could give you positive suggestions, but I really think you need to talk to your doctor or get as many 2nd opinions as you can afford. Possibly a pharmacist might have a suggestion. They have almost as much medical training as regular MDs.
EDIT: No, it not bad to take two mood stabilizers at once, as long as your doctor knows what he/she is doing.
Q: My pharmacy keeps filling seizure medicine wrong, help?
I swear they must think I’m not aware of this. For years I had TC seizures on generic Keppra and generic Topamax. I walked into the pharmacy with a script from my doctor that said “Brand name necessary” and they had to order the real meds (Im on a high dose).
I actually asked the pharmacist months ago if she had enough generic to hold me off for the time being and she said “it is illegal for me to give you generic if the doctor signed here”. Which all makes sense.
So why today when I go back to the same pharmacy do I get generic refills of Topiramate. Isn’t this illegal? That’s what I was told. I opened the bottle just now for my dose and I can’t take it and I guess I’ll skip my meds. It’s a weekend and my doc is out, pharmacy closed.
Anyone else have a problem with Rite Aid?
A: I work for Walgreens. In their computer system, there is a box you can check if the prescriber requires brand. I assume most other pharmacies have a similar sort of system. If the prescriber states brand is necessary, than you cannot dispense the generic. It is illegal, plain and simple.
I would make a complaint to the pharmacy manager and/or the pharmacy district supervisor. Someone is not doing his/her job.
Q: Should I see my doctor again?
I used to take a medicine called Topamax (Topiramate is the full name) that is used to treat migraines and after I stopped taking it I found out it can cause memory loss. It’s been awhile since I stopped taking it but, my memory is still affected.Could something else be wrong?I don’t think it’s just my forgetfulness because I experienced some other side affects.
A: If you feel that it is still causing some side affects see you healthcare provider.
Did you feel like you had memory loss while on the medication? While on the medication did you know that it could cause memory loss? When you stopped the medication and found out then it could cause memory loss did you all of a sudden begin to experiance memory loss?
Thanks!
